StarBoy (Steam Deck): COMPLETED!

Posted on 28/10/2023 Written by deKay

While having a rummage through the various itch.io charidee bundles I’ve bought in the past for something to play, this caught my eye. I think it’s the way it’s superficially a bit like Minit and Gato Roboto, although it’s not really much like either of those games.

What it actually is, is a short platform, all in black and white, with a lot of wall jumping and some puzzles. These puzzles are mostly of the type where you have to take an object from one place to another, but often will be complicated with the main gimmick of the game – the way blocks appear or disappear when you light them up.

You see, there are various lights around which do this job, but sometimes you have to power them (or un-power them), and sometimes you have to charge yourself with a glow from a creature so you can leg it across some “invisible” platforms before the glow wears off.

It’s pretty clever, and a shame there’s not a few more levels because the full depth of this gameplay mechanic could be easily explored much further, I’m sure. But, y’know, it’s cheap and stuff so can’t complain!

Luck Be A Landlord (Steam Deck): COMPLETED!

Posted on 21/08/2023 Written by deKay

You know what the perfect game for a super-powered handheld console that costs £350 and I had to wait for months for is? A free fruit machine game, obviously.

I’d played and completed Luck Be A Landlord a while back on the Mac, but I never really stopped playing it. There are later modes with harder goals that unlock and it’s just a fun thing to play for five minutes every so often. And by five minutes I mean an entire weekend.

Anyway, since putting it on my Steam Deck I found the version it installed on there was newer and so had some additional items and some tweaks here and there, plus I didn’t transfer my save so had to start again. Which I did. And then completed it again (with the landlord being devoured by wolves) before sinking a number of hours into endless mode once I’d done so.

Princess Nom Nom (Steam Deck): COMPLETED!

Posted on 25/07/2023 Written by deKay

It’s been a while since I last played this, but when playing around in the itch.io client on my Steam Deck I noticed it was there, so thought I’d give it another go. And, like before it wasn’t very long or complicated, but it was very cute.

Hue Flowing (Steam Deck): COMPLETED!

This is a very simple platformer concept: explore, collect icons that allow you one additional air jump, then reach the area you can only get to once you’ve collected them all.

But, it’s the way it is presented that is absolutely beautiful. The area you explore is blank, but as you move around you sort of slosh watercolour paint everywhere to colour it in. Like, if de Blob and The Unfinished Swan had a 2D platformer baby.

You can wall jump, and slide down walls, and have to get the upgrades in a particular order as each requires one more jump than the previous one. It’s not a long or difficult game, but it is incredibly well put together with slick, responsive controls and a unique aesthetic. Oh, and it’s free!

Luck Be A Landlord (Mac): COMPLETED!

Posted on 04/08/2021 Written by deKay

This game is a bit like a cross between a clicker and a fruit machine. You spin the reels, and get items appear, and then get money depending on what items and how many of each. But you also unlock more items that could appear, and there are buffs to certain items which increase their worth or a multiplier or both.

So, for example, if you get a Witch, then you get more for each Cat it is next to. Or if you get a Monkey, you get more for Banana. After so many rounds, you have to pay rent and then the rent increases for the next set of rounds. Can’t pay? Game over! So yeah, it’s partly luck based, but then it says that there in the title!

There’s an endless mode, which is obviously impossible to complete, but there’s also a mode with an actual ending, and it’s that I completed.
