Assassin’s Creed II: even more completed

Posted on 01/10/2013 Written by Xexyz

I lacked the patience to collect all the flags in the first game, but the toned-down nature of the feathers collection meant it was far more manageable.  I armed myself with maps and ran around the cities, with little incident other than numerous guards on the rooftops trying to shoot me before they died.

The reward for collecting all the feathers? A short cut scene in which Uncle Mario shows himself to be a heartless monster, and the granting of a new cape and a new weapon.  The cape makes me hated everywhere I wear it, and the weapon is a hammer which leads to ludicrously over-the-top death animations.

All achievements collected as well; I'll never get full completion for the first game due to the fact I didn't talk to Lucy enough, but the achievements were well designed in this game.

So, what next?

Assassin’s Creed II: Completed!

Posted on 27/09/2013 Written by Xexyz

It took a while, but Sequence 13 was excellent and had me wanting more, so I played through the rest of the game.

After the build up I was disappointed to find that I wasn't able to explore Rome, but instead was constrained to a set tunnel to reach the pope. Assassinating him was easy - skirting along the rafters then diving from above - except of course it wasn't that straightforward. Lots of back and forwards, followed by a fist fight which was rigged so I couldn't best him before he'd finished his dialogue.

Then long cut scenes meeting god(s), credits, fights in the modern day, and a flimsy excuse as to why I can go back and collect anything I may have missed. I may well go back for the feathers, but I'll use a map if I do.

Great game, but with the DLC included it probably went on a tad too long. Had I skipped straight to Rome after the Spaniard had run off, I'd probably have appreciated it more. Having said that, Sequence 13 was excellent and varied, so I'm glad I got to play it ...

Assassin’s Creed II: unexpected additional content

Posted on 26/09/2013 Written by Xexyz

It took a long time to become a proper assassin - even though I had killed many people, most of the time deliberately, it wasn't until the end of Sequence 11 that I was admitted into the group, at the top of a Venetian tower.  We all jumped off afterwards.

Venice is a pretty spectacular setting and has been used for a large portion of the game.  I don't think it's entirely geographically accurate - the bridge next to which I proposed to Justine wasn't there, for a start - but you get the same sense of getting lost with canals and paths intersecting constantly.  In real life, it's generally frowned on to jump into the canal and swim across, or climb buildings to jump across the rooftops.

Everything seemed to be building to a climax at the end of Sequence 11.  I found out where to go to meet the Spaniard, and what he was going to be collecting.  I infiltrated the guard house and carried the big important box to meet him.  My compatriots met me and there was a big fight, as you'd expect at the end of the game.

Then the Spaniard ran off.  I'd rescued the Apple of Eden, but hadn't killed the man who provided my motive in the first place.

The game didn't end there.  According to the achievements list and various reviews, there were then two "missing memories" (downloadable content) - Sequences 12 and 13 - which I'd skip over and then I'd finish the game with Sequence 14.  Not so; the game continued with me in Forli trying to infiltrate and defend the town.  I seem to have the DLC already.  I'm sure that I don't have a game of the year edition of the game, but it's possible I suppose that wherever I bought it from gave me the wrong disc ...

Anyway, Forli is defended, and I'm off to start Sequence 13 in Florence.

Mass Effect – Completed

Posted on 23/09/2013 Written by gospvg

Decisions ! decisions ! Just like my current car dilemma, Mass Effect offers you many choices through-out the game and some of these are very tough to decide. Ashley or Alenko which one do you save? Save the Citadel Council or destroy the Sovereign? I decided to save Ashley because she was part of my main Squad with Garrus & I chose to destroy the sovereign so the council members died. Apparently if you carry your character over the choices you make are reflected in the next game or so I think?

I will wait a while before starting the second game to clear up a few unfinished titles, also I’m going to start playing Rayman Origins with the kids. I have a stack full of games on PS+ (PS3 & Vita) which I have not touched, yet I still went out & purchased Rayman Legends, Batman Arkhan Origins (Pre-Order) & my PS4 pre-order is still valid. So lots to keep me busy this year & next.

Cutting back on watching television shows has given me more time to enjoy gaming finishing Mass Effect in 13 days is friggin fast for me, in the past I would take months to complete a game. Slowly but surely clearing my backlog of games I’ll start with Gears of War Judgement, Thomas was Alone & Fallout New Vegas Old World Blues DLC this week before moving onto Spec Ops The Line.

Mass Effect 2 can wait until after Spec Ops, hopefully the side quests are more enjoyable, inventory management easier & the lifts are faster !!

Mass Effect – Sidequests

Posted on 20/09/2013 Written by gospvg

After neglecting the main quests in favour of the Sidequests I have finally had enough of visiting planets to rinse & repeat the same pattern again. Start quest, find planet, land with mako, drive around collect minerals & artifacts, attack compound. Kill Geth, recover item or save someone.

The Sidequests now all just feel the same so I'm now ignoring them & focusing on the main quest. I have completed Noveria & Feros quest line each ending with a boss fight that makes a change & throws up a new challenge.

I've also noticed that levelling up now only awards the other squad members one skill point instead of two?
But Shepherd still receives two points even at my current level of 32.

I'm learning to now pause the game by holding R2 to select a skill usually this is either overkill or assassination. Overkill allows you to continue firing your weapon with no overheating & assassination steadies your aim when using the sniper rifle.

I have landed on the planet Virmire, wow it looks beautiful straight out of a Far Cry game, will hopefully spend some time with the game over the weekend (if I do not get distracted by Rayman Origins) to crack on & complete the main quest.
