It’s not. Zey do nothing!

So I fixed it. Deleting the game from the hard drive and redownloading it, somehow, fixed all the control issues. No, I don’t know how.
Now, I can draw whatever Unite form I want and it works every time. And it’s a good job too, because it turns out when it works properly, the game is awesome.
I’m able to dodge or block attacks now. I don’t have to spend half my play time fighting the controls. I’m really enjoying it. Phew, eh?
It does make me wonder, though – did the reviewers get the same broken version I did?
Anyway. Progress: I have defeated the giant that tries to smash you on the top of a tower, then you go inside him and smash his… Brain? Dunno. Awesome.

Another roundup! Woo!
I’ve played this every single day now for more than four months, and you’d think it’d have grown old by now. But no – I’m still finding new things to do. Being October I’m collecting Spooky Furniture, and this week I managed to pass Gracie’s 4th and final test so she’s now opened up a store inside newly renovated T&T’s. Excellent.
Still in the Clock Tower, but have beaten a few more missions. It’s a great game, but every time I turn my 3DS on, Animal Crossing comes first!
After Brothers (urgh) this was my next big console game to start. Super backlog fighter, yo. And, despite what everyone has said about it, I’m not enjoying it. Having discussed it with lots of people, I’ve come to the conclusion my copy of the game is actually broken. My main issue is that if I draw a circle, I get a red circle. Pressing A should trigger Unite Hand. 95% of the time, it doesn’t – I get a sword. Nobody else is getting this issue, and it’s easily repeatable.
Besides that, I’m struggling to fight big things, and avoid attacks. And figure out what to do half the time as the instructions don’t seem to come up when you actually need them. Ho hum.
I’ll keep trying, but I’m not sure I’m able to “fix” it.
Slayed (slew?) my first Barioth in a welcome return to playing this. It’s been too long. Awesome.

Urgh. I really didn’t enjoy that. And, without spoiling it for anyone else, I can’t really explain why.
I didn’t get used to the two-person, two-sticks controls. The camera caused a few issues (in the snowy area, specifically, and on the final “boss”), and it was far too easy. But they are not the reasons I didn’t like it.
No, it was the story. The last bit of the story. Far too grim for me, especially the bit you do immediately after reaching the top of the Tree of Life. After I’d completed the game I genuinely wished I’d never played it. Horrible. Even worse than that bit in Prey.

I’m torn.
On one hand, this a beautiful, heart-wrenching puzzle-platformer. On the other hand, it’s ICO. Now, I sort of liked ICO. I liked the idea. I liked some of the puzzles. I liked the setting and the graphics (although the horrible low-res made my eyes explode). I didn’t like all the dragging Yorda round and stopping her getting killed, though.
This doesn’t have a lot of that, and the graphics are several billion times easier on the eyes, but still – it’s ICO.
Controlling both brothers at once is awful. Not so much when you do the puzzles like getting one to turn a handle and the other to run around, as you’re not physically making them move togther, but more just navigating from A to B. No matter how hard you try, one always veers off and gets stuck behind something or goes the wrong way, artificially making the easy bits of the game harder.
Since completion time has been reported at just 3 to 5 hours, I’d estimate I’m about half way through. Just after the bit where the younger brother hallucinates about the giant who seems to be his mum, anyway.
