Picross e5 (3DS): COMPLETED!

Posted on 31/01/2015 Written by deKay

tumblr_niyhgz3gd61svmpf2o1_400I do like a bit of Picross. Considering it’s a puzzle game that requires thought, I can lose hours to it by switching my brain off. Seriously – the puzzles complete themselves after a while. It’s like a reflex or something.

Picross e5 is exactly like Picross e4, so if you’ve played that you know what to expect here. The only slight surprise is that they’ve managed to squeeze some extra pixels out of the bottom screen and throw you some 20×15 size puzzles for the first time – 15×15 being the previous max. There aren’t all that many though, with the majority of the game being 15×15.

Maybe for Picross e6 they’ll stop pretending anyone actually uses the stylus controls (nobody does, you idiot) and just go all out on the top screen instead. Pretty sure they could squeeze a 30×20 on there.

SteamWorld Dig (Wii U): COMPLETED!

Posted on 30/01/2015 Written by deKay

tumblr_niyhh9yqey1svmpf2o1_1280And with just under five hours on the clock, the evil electronic consciousness was beaten and my mining days were over.

My memory had placed several other bosses in my brain from when I played the 3DS version. They weren’t in the Wii U one, so I suspect my mind was playing tricks. Or I was getting confused with something else (god knows what though). Or they were optional and I somehow avoided them? It’s a mystery.

Pretty sure I finished this in a slightly shorter time than on the 3DS too, although that was to be expected. It was still a lot of fun, and I’m glad I played it again (and it was over a year since I last did anyway), but there’s really no difference – phantom bosses notwithstanding – between the Wii U and 3DS versions.

Framed – Completed

Posted on 28/01/2015 Written by gospvg

iOS gaming is at it's best when it offers you that new gaming experience like the brilliant Monument Valley, addictive Game Dev Story or the simple pleasures of any of the Angry Bird games.

Framed has you re-ordering comic book style frames to decide the outcome of the story. There are some scenes that alter the game but most have you trying to get over an obstacle or make your way whilst avoiding enemies.

The lovely music plays in the background whilst you figure out the best sequence of the frames to complete the scene.

It is a short game about an hour which suits my stop/go gaming time just fine.

The Starship Damrey (3DS): COMPLETED!

Posted on 21/01/2015 Written by deKay

tumblr_niligxz4vg1svmpf2o1_1280Some games can’t be described in great detail otherwise you’d give away plot spoilers. I can’t really mention anything about The Starship Damrey at all for the same reason.

Even in its opening dialogue, it tells you that you’re going in blind. Nothing is explained. Not even the controls, let alone what you’re supposed to do. So I don’t want to ruin anything.

What I will say, is that this is a good story, with some light game-y sections, and a great twist at the end. And the whole game is only a couple of hours long.

And it’s a bit scary.

byugvm

G’morrow beautiful friends! Here to waft away the damp, darkened skies of the season (or maybe make them damper and darker), it’s Episode 97 of the ugvm Podcast. The podcast you love to subscribe to but hit skip when it comes up on the playlist. Yeah, we know. It’s OK. We don’t get paid either way.

In this episode, deKay, Kendrick and Toby “entertain” you with fun game related news and chat, which this time round includes speculation on Valve’s new hardware triple combo, a show report from the Valorant Champions event in that there Paris (France, not Texas), and one of the team became A Magnificent Man in a Flying Machine. Oh, and Kendrick has bought a new VR headset. Yes, Hell has finally frozen over. Not only that! We have gaaaaaaaaames!
