Games I’ve been playing recently

Posted on 20/10/2013 Written by deKay

Another roundup! Woo!

Animal Crossing: New Leaf (3DS)

I’ve played this every single day now for more than four months, and you’d think it’d have grown old by now. But no – I’m still finding new things to do. Being October I’m collecting Spooky Furniture, and this week I managed to pass Gracie’s 4th and final test so she’s now opened up a store inside newly renovated T&T’s. Excellent.

Luigi’s Mansion 2 (3DS)

Still in the Clock Tower, but have beaten a few more missions. It’s a great game, but every time I turn my 3DS on, Animal Crossing comes first!

Wonderful 101 (Wii U)

After Brothers (urgh) this was my next big console game to start. Super backlog fighter, yo. And, despite what everyone has said about it, I’m not enjoying it. Having discussed it with lots of people, I’ve come to the conclusion my copy of the game is actually broken. My main issue is that if I draw a circle, I get a red circle. Pressing A should trigger Unite Hand. 95% of the time, it doesn’t – I get a sword. Nobody else is getting this issue, and it’s easily repeatable.

Besides that, I’m struggling to fight big things, and avoid attacks. And figure out what to do half the time as the instructions don’t seem to come up when you actually need them. Ho hum.

I’ll keep trying, but I’m not sure I’m able to “fix” it.

Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate (Wii U)

Slayed (slew?) my first Barioth in a welcome return to playing this. It’s been too long. Awesome.

Rayman Legends (Wii U): COMPLETED!

Posted on 05/10/2013 Written by deKay

raymanlegendsBy “completed”, I of course mean, I’ve got to the end credits. See. I don’t have all 700 teensies, or a million lums, or have done all the Origin levels (I haven’t even unlocked most of them) or opened Living Dead Party, but I’ve completed the story.

I played about 60% of the game in co-op with my daughter, which was fun. She generally took on the role of Murfy for those levels where he’s a part, and she did a pretty good job too – even on the harder levels. The last 40% of the game, though, I played through myself.

It’s a great title. It’s better than Origins (not least because it contains Origins), plays fantastically, looks beautiful, and is challenging without being impossible. It is somewhat easier than Origins, however, with the final boss being something of a walkover. This was only slightly disappointing though.

However, despite all the fun and greatness, there’s a niggle that it isn’t quite as good as lots of people have said. I’m not sure what. It feels much bigger than it actually is, which might be it. Or it could be the lower difficulty. Or maybe the shortage of the excellent music levels. I don’t know.

I’m glad I got the Wii U version, though, as the 360/PS3 versions would really be missing out with the lack of proper Murfy levels and two-screen co-op. And everything said, I haven’t actually paid for it, so that was a bonus too!

Need for Speed: Most Wanted U (Wii U): COMPLETED!

Posted on 18/09/2013 Written by deKay

nfsmwuI am Most Wanted! As the saucy minx on the game purred to tell me. I beat the Konigseggsegssgg and took it down to claim it as my own, and that was it – fourteen hours of credits, followed by being dumped back in the game to play some more, only in an invisible car.

And play some more I did. Firstly, to find all of the remaining jack spots (I had about 15 remaining – only one was difficult to find, and that was because it was several floors up in a building), and then I set out to find the three green pipes and the special paint jobbed cars within.

There are still a lot of races and events to do, and I’ve barely played online. I did for a bit this evening, but it’s not as fun as in Burnout Paradise. In fact, that sort of rings true for the whole game. It is really, really good. I love it, and the graphics are fantastic, and I really enjoyed the soundtrack and having “real” cars, but ultimately, it’s Burnout Paradise 2. Only with a seemingly smaller, less varied world, fewer event and event types, no “make your own route” point-to-point races, and no Guns ‘n’ Roses.

Pikmin 3 (Wii U)

Posted on 06/09/2013 Written by deKay

pikmin3allfruitAnd go back for the remaining fruit I did. None of it was that hard to reach, but I did seem to be missing one fruit in the Distant Tundra area. Nothing was showing on the map, but I figured out it was a bunch of grapes I’d somehow not picked up (even though I recall doing so), so headed for where they were.

Only to find a single grape was there. Just one. How I missed one, I don’t know.

With all the fruit collected, I beat the final boss again, and got the Good Ending. Woo!

Pikmin 3 (Wii U): COMPLETED!

Posted on 05/09/2013 Written by deKay

pikmin3end15 hours, apparently. Which equated to 39 in-game days. That’s how long it took me to find the Cosmic Drive key, best the final boss, and escape from Certainly Not Earth and head home with all the fruit juice and seeds I could carry.

Well, most of the fruit juice and seeds. 43 of the 66 fruits available, in fact.

And rather a lot of carrotmen died for the cause. Er, about 700, all in. Which sounds horrific, but you have to remember – without my intervention there’d be only 5 of the things in total. It’s only thanks to my Pikmin Breeding Programme that almost two thousand tasty, tasty Pikmin were even brought into existence, so it’s worth it, overall.

But the game! I haven’t mentioned the game!

It’s Pikmin. In fact, it’s just like Pikmin 1, only without the hard limit on how many days you can stay on the planet before you perish. Sure, there’s a movable limit (it’s determined by how much juice you have – but I had enough for another 30+ days when I’d finished), but it takes away all the stress of rushing the game. There’s still a daily time limit, but that’s not so bad. Aside from when you get near the end of the game and SPOILER happens and you’re left with no juice at all and have to get some quick sharp that very day (and, probably, the next couple of days too).

You have a couple of extra Pikmin types over the first game (and lose the purple and white ones from the second game) – weak but flying pink ones, and heavy rock ones – but the main difference is the graphics. Oh my, the gorgeous, HD, colourful beautiful graphics.

I controlled the whole game with the GamePad. Sure, lots have said it’s better with the remote and nunchuk, but I couldn’t be bothered with that. I didn’t feel out of control at any point anyway, and having the map in my hands was very useful, especially for directing my crew around.

Next task is to return to the game to get the last of the fruit, which I’ll enjoy doing because it is an utterly fantastic game. It might be almost a year later than expected, but it was well worth it.
