Weapon Shop de Omasse (3DS): COMPLETED!

tumblr_nj61z6rgrv1svmpf2o1_400And that’s it! By the end it got pretty easy, as I realised that you only really need to make weapons for the main characters and fob off the NPCs with whatever you have in stock that most closely fits their request.

The final hour or two was mainly waiting. Each main customer came in one at a time, wanted “the ultimate weapon” to defeat the Evil Lord, and then came back a little later after I’d forged it. For a few of them, I’d already made the best weapon, but to kill time I forged new ones in case I managed to improve the stats through better forging.

tumblr_nj61z17nxj1svmpf2o1_400The forging in general was pretty hit and miss (ha!), as it wasn’t always clear which bits of metal you were supposed to strike and which you weren’t. Still, I struggled through without much difficulty, and late in the game I realised that doing badly in forging was actually a bonus as it mean you got more hits in and thus better stats. Which seems a bit backward. Improved things further by making use of the heating up and cooling down options, which I’d ignored early on. Also ignored were the additional “ingredients” for the weapons which supposedly improve them, but I found superfluous and usually just added them at random just because they were there, or just didn’t bother.

tumblr_nj41qm9ahs1svmpf2o1_400Technically, the game was completed once my first customer beat the Evil Lord, but you get an extra achievement (or Feat or Accomplishment or whatever the game calls them) for getting everyone to beat him so I did that. Apart from the coward bloke who just ran away, but it appears that was what was supposed to happen.

Then I found out that I could have avoided all the waiting by holding down the L button to speed up time. Sigh.

Another World: completed!

I continued to play this on the 3DS for convenience.  I was quite close to the end, it seems - after fighting my way past a group of guards, assisted by releasing animals that attacked them, I was escorted to a big tank thing which was then repeatedly attacked, and I had to prod at various buttons to fire my escape pod into a public bath. 


I then ran away from the shooters, following my friend, before falling down a hole and being saved by an enemy.  Why he didn't let me drop I have no idea.  He kicked me over and was about to kill me when buddy intervened, leading to a big fist fight.  I crawled over to the control panel ... very slowly ... then killed the baddie as he walked towards me.


I teleported up through the ceiling, and was initially worried by the big bird thing until I realised it was the way out.

Picross e5 (3DS): COMPLETED!

tumblr_niyhgz3gd61svmpf2o1_400I do like a bit of Picross. Considering it’s a puzzle game that requires thought, I can lose hours to it by switching my brain off. Seriously – the puzzles complete themselves after a while. It’s like a reflex or something.

Picross e5 is exactly like Picross e4, so if you’ve played that you know what to expect here. The only slight surprise is that they’ve managed to squeeze some extra pixels out of the bottom screen and throw you some 20×15 size puzzles for the first time – 15×15 being the previous max. There aren’t all that many though, with the majority of the game being 15×15.

Maybe for Picross e6 they’ll stop pretending anyone actually uses the stylus controls (nobody does, you idiot) and just go all out on the top screen instead. Pretty sure they could squeeze a 30×20 on there.

SteamWorld Dig (Wii U): COMPLETED!

tumblr_niyhh9yqey1svmpf2o1_1280And with just under five hours on the clock, the evil electronic consciousness was beaten and my mining days were over.

My memory had placed several other bosses in my brain from when I played the 3DS version. They weren’t in the Wii U one, so I suspect my mind was playing tricks. Or I was getting confused with something else (god knows what though). Or they were optional and I somehow avoided them? It’s a mystery.

Pretty sure I finished this in a slightly shorter time than on the 3DS too, although that was to be expected. It was still a lot of fun, and I’m glad I played it again (and it was over a year since I last did anyway), but there’s really no difference – phantom bosses notwithstanding – between the Wii U and 3DS versions.
