3D Space Harrier (3DS): COMPLETED!

Posted on 30/11/2013 Written by deKay

This week, the long awaited 3D Classics from Sega finally made it to the 3DS in Europe. Well, two games did, anyway, with more to come. So far, Space Harrier and Super Hang On have been released, and I decided to pick up Space Harrier.

Many, many years ago, I was the champion of Space Harrier at this here arcade in Southport:

Good times. I’d go there a few times a year and I’d still be at the top of the high score table. Either I was the only person who ever played it, or I was the only one any good at it. I don’t know which but I suspect the former.

Anyway, the 3DS version is the definitive conversion. It’s arcade perfect, even down to simulating the noise the buttons and hydraulics made on the actual arcade cabinet. It’ll even tilt the screen liek the “ride-on” did. And, not only that, but it’s in 3D. Fantastic.

And I’ve completed it already. OK, so I can only get as far as level 12 (of 18) without running out of lives and credits and having to continue from there on a new game, but still – I can reach the end. Level 18 was a disappointing SuckySuck(TM) bit, but the whole game is so immersive and fast moving and great looking with 3D on that it can be forgiven. More of this sort of thing Sega! Oh, wait – 3D Sonic the Hedgehog next week? takemymoney.gif!

Pikmin 2: a disastrous day 4

Posted on 29/11/2013 Written by Xexyz

As you can see from my to-do list, there are a number games that I want to play and complete before I move onto the next in the series.  I loved Pikmin, and completed it properly by playing through twice and getting all the rocket ship parts within thirty days.  I bought Pikmin 2 for the GameCube, and then never got around to playing it because I wanted to devote time to it.  I bought the original and the sequel when they were released on the Wii, and have bought the third game for the Wii U.  I've never played any of them.

Until now.  Spurred on by the blue Wii U game box sitting on the shelf mocking me, I've started to play New Play Control Pikmin 2 on the Wii.  Yes, actually on the Wii and not on the Wii mode of the Wii U, so that I can take screenshots and video through my component capture box.  One of the best things about the Wii U is the integration of Miiverse, and it's daft that you can't use that while running Wii games.

The Wii seems to output at a bit of an odd resolution which the capture box has difficulty with, but you get the idea.

I'd forgotten how freaky Olimar looks, but compared to other people on his home planet, he's positively plain-looking.

Louie's expressions in particular are pretty horrific, and I was pleased to get into the game with the lovely pikmin.

The idea of the game is to collect rubbish which has a high value back home, so that Olimar's boss won't have his business closed and all assets repossessed.  The SS Dolphin was already taken, and so Olimar and Louie travel back to Earth in a rickety old rocket which has a really annoying metallic twang every time it speaks.

While I'm talking about things that annoy, the font used to show the number of pikmin, the name of areas, the results of the day, and so on, is really ugly.  It's odd that there are two different fonts used, with one nice and neat and the other really scrappy.

The first piece of rubbish indicates that we could be looking at a heavily branded experience ...

... but luckily so far I've not found anything too bad, and most stuff is actually old Nintendo memorabilia, like a Game & Watch, Love Tester, or playing card.  There are, of course, other things that you can collect in order to spawn more pikmin.

On day 2 I went into the first cave, where time seems to stand still and there are treasures aplenty.  The caves are a bit dingy.

The aforementioned Love Tester was also in a cave, and the annoying rocket thing reckons he can use it to make a gauge of some sort.  That sounds like a waste of a good antique electronic device.

I was doing well until day 4, but I then went through a long cave and found a big bug at the end.  I threw loads of pikmin at him, and he then straightened out and started rolling from side to side.  Many pikmin were squashed almost immediately.

They shall not be forgotten.

Lost Cities – New High Score – 149 !!

Posted on 28/11/2013 Written by gospvg

Totally smashed my previous Lost Cities high score of 95 with 149 on a game against Luffers.

Getting two +20 bonus points on the Blue & Yellow helped & concentrating on just three colours to maximise the score.

I can't see me beating 149 for a long time.

GTAV – Racing or in my case crashing

Posted on 28/11/2013 Written by gospvg

I stupidly decided to take part in the RLLMUK GTA V Race League. It was as expected a difficult start I find the cars just pinball around when you crash & this is where I lose a lot of positions. I'm much better with bikes although I do occasionally hit the traffic. Having not done many races, knowing the track layout takes a while to learn, currently there is a limited option on the races so I started off poorly finishing 8th, 9th or DNF but came back with a 6th & a close 5th finish just pipping Saint at the last race. Points are only awarded to the top 6 finishers so thankfully I got a few points on the board.

With the PS4 arriving soon I won't get much chance to practice before next week's meeting but hopefully the experience of the tracks will help me out to try and get a few more 5th or 6th place finishes. I now also know that to fire rockets you need to press the left click on the stick so at least I can now shoot these Mario Kart style.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies: Turnabout Reclaimed (3DS): COMPLETED!

Posted on 27/11/2013 Written by deKay

phoenixwrightorcaThis DLC, self-contained case was released for Phoenix Wright 5 (yes, I know that’s not the title, but look at this post’s title – huuuuge!!) last week, and, having just finished the main game I was eager for more and immediately downloaded it. £3.99 seemed like peanuts for more Phoenix. And it was.

I’ve just finished it, and it’s certainly one of the more… out there Phoenix trials. I mean, you just have to look at that picture there to realise that. I’m cross-examining a whale.

The case was pretty long too. After a few hours it seemed like I was on the final straight, but then a spoiler happened and I realised I was actually only halfway through. In total this case took about 7 hours, so no complaints on length. No complaints at all, in fact. It was glorious.

And new character Marlon Rimes is the best character ever. I mean, he’s a rapping pirate animal feeder. What’s not to love?
