Toki Tori 2 (Wii U)

Posted on 04/08/2013 Written by deKay

tokitori2This image shows just one of $hlmun places where I got stuck. So stuck I thought I’d have to give up. So I posted on Miiverse, and before I got a reply, I figured it out myself.

Exactly like I did with every other puzzle where I got stuck.

I’ve just realised this is the first time I’ve mentioned this game here. Not really surprising, as I bought it as soon as it came out, and hated it. It was too fiddly, the map was impossible to understand, and the puzzles were – even near the start – frustrating. I played for about an hour, and gave up.

Then I dug it out again a few days ago, and persevered with it. Eventually, the map made sense. I discovered ways of making creatures do things. I eventually figured out that our sparky chums in that screenshot could be doused with water to fizz them out. Then the second part of the game kicked in – you reach a giant heart, and are shown areas to find special frogs, which you have to lure into vacuum tubes. So off you go again, warping round (ah! that’s what the monoliths are for!) trying to get the special frogs.

And, somehow, the game is now awesome.

With 4 of the (it appears) 5 frogs caught, I think I’m nearing the end, but I’m really glad I gave Toki Tori 2 another shot.

New Game – The Loading (Last) of Us

Posted on 04/08/2013 Written by gospvg

Thanks to this game I can now fully appreciate the benefits of digital media. If like me you have purchased the retail physical media version make yourself a cup of tea/coffee or in my case nothing because I'm fasting. It is that long that it takes me back to my Acorn Electron days & tape loading.

Anyhow the game, yes it has zombies, infected or whatever you want to call them. Wait !! don't leave just yet !!

Like most gamers I am also sick to death of zombie games although I am disappointed that Nintendo have not delved into the theme, Super Mario Zombie !!

The Last of Us is made by Naughty Dog, the team that made the Uncharted series so if not anything else you can almost guarantee that it is going to have a hollywood-esqe story, voice-acting & a great musical score.

Just by playing the opening sequence you are not disappointed by the work Naughty Dog have put into the game. It provides the backdrop for Joel & shows you the beginning of the outbreak. Then fast forward 20 years & quarantine zones have now been set up. A military style regimented system is in full flow. Controlling the human population & rationing the consumption of resources. Yes this game has also ticked the box by having an anti-government group called the "Fireflies". The leader of the "Fireflies" asks Joel & Tess to deliver a package, the package is "Ellie" a 14 year old girl who is immune to the infection.

Ammo is very scarce in the game so you really need to focus on using your melee skills, ideally by stealth. You can collect resources during the game & craft items like healing kits, shivs & my favourite molotovs. I have left the quarantine zone & ventured outside. This is when you start to encounter the infected, in most zombie games they would not be a problem because you will have stacks of ammo but in this game you need to play slowly & carefully by using stealth to your advantage to either avoid contact or preform a melee takedown.

Similar to Uncharted after you have cleared an area of enemies you are free to wonder around & collect items. I strongly suggest you do this because you can always find healing items, more ammo or materials for crafting hidden away in a locked room or desk drawer.

It has been a promising first few hours of play-time & I'm looking (not) forward to loading up the game again.

Nintendo Land: being a pikmin

Posted on 03/08/2013 Written by Xexyz

I've been on holiday for the past week with my extended family, and as part of that my brother took along his Wii U.  We played Mario Chase a lot, which (as you'd expect) works best with five players.  We also played Animal Crossing: Sweet Day a fair bit, as everyone finds it hilarious when people are waddling around with massive heads.

On the last day, I played through many levels of Pikmin Adventure with my brother, switching roles every couple of checkpoints.  It works really well as a co-operative game, though at the end of each level you're shown who played better throughout.

Look at my contribution!

The game is very pretty, with an interesting aesthetic of robotic versions of the typical Pikmin enemies.  They have obvious hit points, which you can then throw pikmin onto, including any player-controlled pikmin.

The game predates the flying pikmin of Pikmin 3, but that doesn't mean you don't get airborne.  One annoyance is that even if Olimar and all player pikmin are on a launch pad, Olimar has to call the pikmin to him before the launch pad will launch.

It's good fun throwing player pikmin into random areas.

Pikmin.

95: Bother Me Anatomically
byugvm

Unforeseen circumstances, and definitely not Podcast Apathy, resulted in just deKay and Kendrick bringing you this episode, but don’t worry! As a bonus to make up for the cast shortfall, Episode 95 is slightly shorter, so you’ve less to endure! Rejoice.

This time around, your heroes discuss the general meh-ness of recent gaming news, the Switch 2 having no games, a new Lego Batman (and Batman in general), and Ys X Proud Nordics. With, naturally, many deviations and diversions.
