Attack of the Friday Monsters (3DS): COMPLETED!

Posted on 31/12/2013 Written by deKay

aotfm_16_fullThis is another one of those “Guild” games – short, experimental titles that were originally in a compilation in Japan, but were released in the UK as separate digital only games. I’d been interested in getting it for a while as people had said it was a fun little story in a slightly bizarre setting, and I’m a fan of strange and obscure Japanese games. However, when it came out I had lots of other games to play and no eShop credit.

It’s currently on offer, so a couple of days ago I bought it. And, within three hours play, it was complete – not that the shortness matters, as I went into the game knowing it was short.

The plot is a bit confusing, consisting of a quiet 1970s Tokyo suburb, its residents, and giant 70′s style monsters that appear each Friday night, which somehow doesn’t really concern any of the locals. Coincidentally, or not – you decide – the local TV station films their show about giant 70′s style monsters on Fridays. But then there’s some other plot about aliens, and how they may or may not be controlling, responsible for, or fighting the monsters.

You play as a young boy who has recently moved to the area, and much of the game is his interactions with other children from his school, his parents who run the local laundry, and other local residents – some of whom are a little… odd. You help solve minor incidents, riddles and relationship issues, all the time collecting “glims”, which you exchange for playing cards. You use these cards to “battle” the other kids in a variant of scissors, paper, stone. If you win, you get to be their “boss”, and they open up more information for you.

Anyway, the story is sort of gentle and sweet in a Ghibli sort of way, and certainly kept me hooked. Once completed, the game lets you continue to tie up a few loose ends and finish your card collection, but there’s no obvious way to solve all of the remaining side stories and a search of the internet shows pretty everyone else is also stuck, so I’m not sure I can proceed. Still, at least the main story is done.

Snowman bingo. What. I’ve built a few snowmen and got a bingo card and each day I can make the snowmen’s eyes spin and they give me a number and I stamp it and then what? What happens when I get bingo!?

Luigi’s Mansion 2 (3DS): COMPLETED!

Posted on 09/12/2013 Written by deKay

PREVIOUSLY ON LUIGI’S MANSION 2!

Our hero had recovered all but one of the Dark Moon fragments, and had located the final piece – inside a giant portal on the roof of the final mansion. After defeating wave after wave of ghosts as they were ejected from the portal, he was sucked into the purple swirly and was confronted with a boss – several suits of armour followed by one massive suit of armour, who was impossible to defeat. Was this the end of our hero’s adventure? Will the Dark Moon ever be stitched back together? Just how many pairs of pants has Luigi gone through anyway?

AND NOW: THE CONCLUSION!

The giant suit of armour was actually really easy. I just needed to be careful and bide my time. After that, was the real final boss fight with King Boo (which isn’t really a spoiler as it’s obvious he’s the final boss before you even get to the end of the first mansion), which was alarmingly simple. Probably the easiest boss fight in the entire game, in fact, in part due to the many, many hearts thrown at you in the “side scrolling” sections of the battle.

And that’s it! Dark Moon restored, and the valley saved. For now.

3D Sonic the Hedgehog (3DS): COMPLETED!

Posted on 07/12/2013 Written by deKay

Um, yeah. So I now own 12 (different) copies of the original Sonic the Hedgehog game. And that doesn’t even include the Master System and Game Gear versions – just the Megadrive one, and it’s ports. This is the only one in 3D though.

OK, so it’s not “as 3D” as 3D Space Harrier. This is a gentler, more incidental 3D, with all the layers of fore- and background parallax now on their own 3D plane. You know what? It looks fantastic. Sure, it doesn’t add anything to actually playing the game, but it feels like this was always how Sonic was supposed to be. Gorgeous.

And I’ve completed it. It isn’t hard, and I’ve played it enough times so I’d like to think I wouldn’t find it even slightly tricky, which I didn’t. In fact, I completed it with 27 lives (never losing any) and all 6 Chaos Emeralds collected by the time I finished Spring Yard Zone. Hello ladies.

Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies: Completed!

Posted on 03/12/2013 Written by Xexyz

There's not too much I can say about case 5 without spoiling it completely, but there were some pretty large twists which helped segue case 4 into case 5 and then turn case 5 on its head halfway through.  Really well scripted and thought out, though the quality of the translation dropped a few times.  That being said, there were some excellent lines and situations.

And I didn't get a screenshot, but Athena's line of "The court will note that this is different from the selective hearing men are so good at!" made me laugh a lot.  I particularly enjoyed the references to older games in the series, such as the ladder and stepladder specification.

But now it's over, and there'll be a wait for the next game.

Or not, because there's a brand new case available on the eShop! Huzzah!
