Lego City Undercover: The Chase Begins: story completed

Posted on 31/08/2013 Written by Xexyz

That was pretty short, really - though the fact I get to spend much more time on handheld games always makes them feel shorter. I've finished the story now, which ends with a good link to the Wii U game and Chase being sent abroad. I was concerned that this would mean that I couldn't continue to search the city, but straight after the credits I was back in Lego City.  The game is apparently 30.6% complete, even though I have been mopping up the collectables and activities as I found them.

It's a little too similar to the Wii U game if anything, with the same puzzles and characters. The controls are awfully imprecise and I frequently found myself falling off ledges. Due to this, I don't know if I'll ever get to 100% completion - particularly since the scanner which you use to find hidden items has a pretty poor range and you can't just drive around looking for things because they only appear when they're about ten metres away.

Having said that, I've a ten hour flight to South Africa next week ...

Lego City Undercover: The Chase Begins: slow crawling fog

Posted on 19/08/2013 Written by Xexyz

I am once again getting myself very confused by playing two similar games on two systems.  The last time this happened, at least the two games were graphically dissimilar and in different worlds.  This time, I am running around the same city on the 3DS as exists in the Wii U game, and the structure of the game is near identical, to the extent that I cam being frustrated when I find pigs on the 3DS that I can't ride them as I've only gained the farmer costume on the Wii U, and so on.

It takes little away from the game, which is not as amazing as its big brother but is still a notable achievement, but the city does feel a lot emptier and the draw distance - particularly when crossing the bridge - can be awful, disguised by a creeping fog.

I've spent the last half hour running errands on a construction site, in order to facilitate the building of the bridge to the next area.  Moving between areas requires a lengthy loading pause, so it's lucky that the missions are seemingly quite compact and straight-forward.

MH3U – Heat Exhaustion

Posted on 13/08/2013 Written by choobs

Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate box artOh Good God. That was a bastard. Heat Exhaustion is a five star quest (but fairly early on) which requires a big of thinking to do. Firstly, it’s set in the volcanic area, so naturally you’ll need a good supply of cold drinks. Secondly, it requires carrying burning hot rocks which constantly deplete your health from one end of the map to the other, a bit like the ‘Poached Wyvern Eggs’ quest. Except they don’t break if you drop them – they explode. So you’re going to need a lot of health and a lot of stamina. Thirdly, just to make things fun, there’s a Uragaan on the loose. If it hits you, the powderstone explodes. If the ground shakes when it thumps its tail, the powderstone explodes. If you’re in range when it roars, the powderstone explodes.

It’s a bastard of a quest. Here’s what I did:

First off, take plenty of potions, mega-potions, cool drinks and well done steaks. Most importantly, get a meal made with fresh ingredients and choose the cooking method which will give you Felyne Lander. This will allow you, carrying a stone, to leap from the ledge in area 10 and land safely in area 5, shortcutting half of the map, without the damn thing exploding.

Clear out any mobs you find on your way to 10. Many of them won’t respawn and it’ll make things easier when carrying the stones.

This bit is optional, but makes things more interesting. Hunt down the Uragaan. He does a lot of damage but isn’t mega-tough. That will probably take you about half an hour, leaving you an easy 20 minutes to grab the stones. Pick them up at 10, run like hell off the ledge to 5, then it’s plain sailing. Repeat. Win.

Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D (3DS)

Posted on 11/08/2013 Written by deKay

So hard. So very, very hard.

Any game that causes me to lose over 40 lives in a single level is hard. To have several levels where I lose 40+ lives, is just ridiculous. That said, I’m sticking with it. Even though I did one level today (one in the Cliffs where you get barrel’d into the background and have to quickly run right and reach a platform before the floor disappears) and nearly snapped my 3DS in frustration.

Needless to say I’ll be glad when this ordeal is over. I’ve two “worlds” left yet, though!

The Laggy Ass of Lagiacrus

Posted on 05/08/2013 Written by choobs

Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate box artOh, he’s a pain in the arse, isn’t he? So, I’m currently wearing two bits of Barroth armour (head and belt) and the rest is Jaggi. I’m using upgraded Ludroth Pair (dual swords) and doing a fair bit of damage, but that thunder attack keeps wreaking bloody havoc on me.

The good news is that a full set of Barroth armour will give me a nice thunder resist bonus. On top of that, some nice ThunderRes decorations will boost it a little more. The trouble is, the three parts of Barroth armour that I’m missing all need Fertile Mud and that just seems to be refusing to drop for me.

I think I’m going to take the approach of trying captures, as it seems to drop more frequently in capture rewards than it does just by whacking the mud off him and collecting the sparklies. Sigh.
