Trip World (3DS): COMPLETED!

Posted on 18/11/2013 Written by deKay

tripworldcompletedOn my 3DS home screen, the first “page” of icons is set to be “currently playing, and not yet completed games”. And some other things like Streetpass thingy and the Nintendo Video app. But mainly games I’ve not completed. Completed titles (and games I’ve given up on, demos, other apps, and stuff) are squirrelled away on other pages.

Trip World has sat on page one for Far Too Long Now. More than 18 months, in fact. Unplayed because I got to the boss at the end of World 3 and he was impossible. I died many times. I gave up, but never totally actually gave up or I’d have moved the game to Gave Up Page on the home screen.

For no reason other than it suddenly annoyed me that this was the only Game Boy game on the 3DS Virtual Console I’ve bought but not finished, I decided to try again. And you know what? Five attempts and he was beaten. Pretty easy. I was angry with myself for not doing it before.

The rest of the game was really rather simple. Even the end boss caused me no trouble one I realised you could stand on his head and you couldn’t be hit. And now it’s done and I’ll probably never play it again.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies (3DS): COMPLETED!

Posted on 16/11/2013 Written by deKay

That final case was all over the place. Not least when the real villain was revealed, and then that person was really revealed. Twists and turns everywhere, which pretty much nobody being quite what I expected.

And that’s it! More than 23 hours, making it the longest Phoenix Wright game by around 5 hours. Not bad considering this one is more streamlined than the others. But it’s not over yet! Capcom announced a DLC extra chapter this week, and that’s due in a couple of weeks time, so there’ll be more Wright very soon. He’s been gone too long. Tooooo long.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies (3DS)

Posted on 11/11/2013 Written by deKay

pw5-1So, so good. The plots in these cases are just so well thought out. The way Apollo/Athena/Phoenix suddenly turn an inescapable “guilty” verdict into the exact opposite by reversing the way the murder could have been committed is always masterful.

The drama in the courtroom is tense, and the buildups to the end of each case are as adrenalin fuelled as much as any FPS boss battle. Not bad for an interactive story about lawyers…

This evening I finished up Case 4, which ended on a pretty massive bombshell. Well, not literally a bombshell (for once – one of the other cases ended with an actual bomb). I was expecting a twist, but the character who has now been fingered as the murderer is not who I was expecting.

Some fingerprints show the murderer to be

Spoiler Inside SelectShow
Athena

but I was expecting

Spoiler Inside SelectShow
Apollo

Hmm!

Animal Crossing: New Leaf (3DS)

Posted on 10/11/2013 Written by deKay

ac_goldenslingshotAnd still I’m playing this. I’ve yet to miss a single day of play, in fact. That puts me past the number of consecutive days played of any previous version for sure, and, past the number of days in total I’ve played both Wild World and Let’s Go To The City. I don’t recall how many days I actually played the Gamecube version for though. I know it was a lot, and pretty much a year from start to finish, but I know I didn’t play daily.

A reward today was this – a golden slingshot! I don’t know how this was triggered, and it was only by fluke I saw it floating overhead, but there it is. Woo!

In other AC news, I’ve been collecting Harvest furniture from T&T, and have been getting a few items of Mushroom furniture by picking up things which look like mushrooms and are the size of mushrooms, but in fact are sometimes lamps and beds and cupboards and stuff. Obviously.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies (3DS)

Posted on 03/11/2013 Written by deKay

It was touch and go for a while as to whether this game would even see light of day in the West. After all, the series is not as popular as it once was, and the two “interim spin-offs” starring Edgeworth were not well received. In fact, the second of these remained Japan-only.

Thankfully, a Capcom saw sense, and even though it’s an eShop exclusive, here it is.

Capcom have done a fantastic job of updating the visuals for the 3DS. Characters are now polygonal, but drawn as if they’re flat like before. Unlike in many 2D to 3D transfers, the sprites remain true up the originals, and all the redone animation manages to feel the same as before but smooth and slick too. The same goes for backgrounds – they’re the same, only better.

The game itself plays just like the older games. Point and click “investigation” (made easier now by making it more obvious where to go, which is a good decision) followed by a courtroom showdown. I’m on case 3 at the moment, and so far have played “as” Phoenix, Apollo, and new girl Athena. Some old characters have returned, but the cast so far is mostly new. They’re all great and well written too, with ridiculous quirks and dress sense.

In all, it’s another Phoenix Wright game. And is awesome.
