Rebel Galaxy (PS5) – Completed Review

Posted on 05/08/2021 Written by gospvg

I have tried to play Elite Dangerous a few times but the learning curve is too steep, No Mans Sky scratched my space travel itch back in 2016 but I had the urge again. After completing Spider-Man Miles Morales I looked through my PS+ library and found Rebel Galaxy and after watching a couple of reviews on youtube it deserved a try.

Three hours later and I was hooked. Transporting goods around the system, fighting pirates, saving merchants from attacks and playing the market to make some credit on Gold Ingots.

The combat is naval-style where you use broadside cannons to line up attacks & turrets target fighter ships. When you have enough credits you can look at either upgrading your weapons, defence or engine components.

Make sure you visit stations on a regular basis because these are also what trigger the auto-save feature. I had a couple of game crashes on the PS5 and lost some of my progress.

When you are either brave or strong enough to leave the first system you will get access to missions which offer a better reward and you no longer need to play the trading game. I was completing missions that would offer 100K which quickly made me save enough to purchase the Tennhausen ship. Thankfully all of your previous ship upgrades carry over and you just need to focus on the extra turrents on the new ship. There are quite a few ships in the game everything from nimble frigates to Destroyers & Dreadnaughts.

There is a simple story which will have you travelling through many systems and facing up against many foes. There is a staus bar for each faction but I found it almost impossible to get on a neutral footing with any of the pirate factions so just stuck on good terms with the Militia and destroyed anyone else that got in my way.

If you are looking for an 'Elite-lite' then Rebel Galaxy scratched that itch for me perfectly, next for me is The First Tree an indie exploration game.

Mom Hid My Game! 2 (Switch): COMPLETED!

Posted on 04/08/2021 Written by deKay

A while back I played the original of this and it was cheap, short and silly. The sequel is just the same, only with different scenarios. It seemed a bit easier too, but perhaps I was more tuned to look for weird stuff or something.

There’s not much more to say about it – just read the original post!

Luck Be A Landlord (Mac): COMPLETED!

Posted on 04/08/2021 Written by deKay

This game is a bit like a cross between a clicker and a fruit machine. You spin the reels, and get items appear, and then get money depending on what items and how many of each. But you also unlock more items that could appear, and there are buffs to certain items which increase their worth or a multiplier or both.

So, for example, if you get a Witch, then you get more for each Cat it is next to. Or if you get a Monkey, you get more for Banana. After so many rounds, you have to pay rent and then the rent increases for the next set of rounds. Can’t pay? Game over! So yeah, it’s partly luck based, but then it says that there in the title!

There’s an endless mode, which is obviously impossible to complete, but there’s also a mode with an actual ending, and it’s that I completed.

Zelda (Game & Watch): COMPLETED!

Posted on 31/07/2021 Written by deKay

I was lucky enough to be given (an original!) one of these, as well a Donkey Kong and Donkey Kong II, this weekend. It’s the best Game & Watch game and although I have a keyring mini replica I haven’t played the G&W classic since it was a Hot Product in the school playground.

And it still stands up really well today. Although it was much, much easier than I recall because I managed to complete it on my first go. Actually completing G&W games is unusual because most are high score chaser games, but Zelda has an endpoint – get all the bits of triforce by killing all the dragons – and that’s what I did. It was Excellent.

50: In Your Eyeholes

Posted on 30/07/2021 Written by deKay Leave a Comment

Well this is exciting! To celebrate 50 episodes of everyone’s favourite podcast with the letters u, g, v and m in it, we did a live video show! No, not that sort of live video show.

Because of that, Episode 50 is a little different. deKay, Kendrick and Zo were actually there, in person, on camera to natter about games, but in case you prefer to listen to us rather than look at us (which is very likely because, my word have you seen us?) we’ve made an audio only version available too.

In this episode, we talk about the Switch Pro, the Steam Deck, the Playdate, Denuvo, the Activision Blizzard stuff in the news, and Zo got an Xbox headset and wants to tell you all about it. As well as all that, we also spoke about these games:

  • Animal Crossing New Horizons
  • One Piece Pirate Warriors 4
  • Alwa’s Legacy
  • Wonder Boy: Asha in Monster World
  • Ratchet & Clank: A Rift Apart
  • Assassin’s Creed Valhalla
  • Tetris Effect
  • Sonic Adventure
  • Yakuza 0
  • Phantasy Star Online 2 New Genesis
  • Phantasy Star Online
  • Sega Rally Revo

And, some LIVE QUESTIONS that came in as we recorded! Fresh. Oh, and Toby was an absolute legend being the buttons-and-knobs man behind the scenes.

95: Bother Me Anatomically
byugvm

Unforeseen circumstances, and definitely not Podcast Apathy, resulted in just deKay and Kendrick bringing you this episode, but don’t worry! As a bonus to make up for the cast shortfall, Episode 95 is slightly shorter, so you’ve less to endure! Rejoice.

This time around, your heroes discuss the general meh-ness of recent gaming news, the Switch 2 having no games, a new Lego Batman (and Batman in general), and Ys X Proud Nordics. With, naturally, many deviations and diversions.
