Assassin’s Creed III: an expanding map

Posted on 30/11/2016 Written by Xexyz

Now, this is the Assassin's Creed I recognise.  A map filling with icons to distract me from the main quest, a feeling of being overwhelmed and not understanding half the gameplay mechanics.  It looks as if I can build up my homestead with people sympathetic to my cause; there are pages of books flying around and random feathers; there are viewpoints and animal pawprint missions (?) and message delivery missions and and and.

It was so much easier when I was an eagle.

So, as always, I've started off by ignoring the story and trying to scale all the viewpoints in order to unlock the map.  What is quite interesting, though, is that I have a much lower drive to get the rest of the side missions completed when I don't have the achievements or trophies to chase.  I'm happy to see the pages disappear into the distance, not chasing them like those awful dynamic orbs in Crackdown 2.  I'm far more likely to head for the exclamation mark to continue the story.  This is shaking off years of videogame training, where sidequests may have been optional but they always made progression easier; in Assassin's Creed the benefits you get are marginal at best.

But it's still a bit overwhelming.

Gaming Shelf – It’s a me Mario!

Posted on 28/11/2016 Written by gospvg

This is my gaming shelf, I had lots of Nintendo points to use up so went & ordered one of these Mario gaming rack. It's designed for 3DS/DS games but I use it for the PS4.

Nintendo love Sony and vice versa so it's ok.

What is on it at the moment then?

Ok list time!

Dragon Quest Builders
Fifa 16
The Division
The Last of Us
Lego Star Wars
Overwatch
Bioshock Collection
Lego Harry Potter
Rise of the Tomb Raider
Mafia 3
XCom2 (with Abbas at the moment)

You can't fit that many games on it! True you can only get around 8 so the titles in red are on the shelf with the others in a cupboard.

I completed Dragon Quest Builders at the weekend & just ordered Rise of the Tomb Raider today so will start that when it arrives. Loved the first game in the reboot series & was pissed off that it was an XB1 exclusive for a year.

Final Fantasy XI has been released but I am going to wait for a few months for patches to fix issues I am reading about camera control & combat gameplay. Hopefully it will by the drop to my impulse purchase price of below £25

World of Final Fantasy is also on my shopping list, also I may be buying No Man's Sky again, Hello Games have released an update which brings new features like base building & survival mode.

Pokémon X: breezing through the gyms

Posted on 28/11/2016 Written by Xexyz

Still playing this, but I feel my pokémon may be too powered up now since I've taken the last two gyms with one-hit-kills, and I struggle to capture any wild pokémon without making them faint.  I may need to try to rush through the story a bit.

I have settled on a great team though:

  • Delphox, now level 54, with fire moves
  • Blastoise, level 51, with surf and strength
  • Pidgeot, level 51, a variety of flying and dragon moves
  • Pikachu, level 50, electrified up
  • Amaura, level 48, with ice and fighting moves
  • Lucario, level 46, with ghost and fighting
I've grown a bit too attached to them all, which doesn't bode well for finding legendaries ...

SNK vs Capcom: Match of the Millennium (NGPC): COMPLETED!

Posted on 27/11/2016 Written by deKay

While I was in Neo Geo Pocket Colour Mode, I busted out SNK vs Capcom. The NGPC had a lot of fighting games, but perhaps the best was this crossover title featuring characters from both SNK and Capcom series.

I punch you.

I picked Ken, because Ken is Best, and quickly made it through as far as what I thought was the final boss battle – a team-up between M Bison from Street Fighter and Geese Howard from Fatal Fury. It was easy going until then, as I lost just one round (and that was close) before meeting that pair, then it all went wrong.

snk vs capcom
Fwends.

Several million attempts later, most of which ended before I’d even defeated one of the two fighters – and a few before I even got a single hit in – I finally beat them. Naturally, they were not the final bosses after all – Iori in full on Zombie mode was.

snk vs capcom
That’s a whole lot of nothing you’re saying there, boy.

Thankfully, he was a much easier than Bison and Geese, although he still took a fair few attempts, and I’d completed it!

Sonic the Hedgehog Pocket Adventure (NGPC): COMPLETED!

Posted on 27/11/2016 Written by deKay

It has been a long time since I played a Neo Geo Pocket game, but having figured out why they hadn’t been working on Retropie (games have to be .ngc files, if you’re interested) I got stuck into Sonic the Hedgehog Pocket Adventure.

Hammer! Hammer! I am! Hammer! They put me in the mix!

I remember being slightly disappointed when I bought it for my Neo Geo Pocket Colour back in the day. There I was expecting a new 2D Sonic platformer, perhaps a 2D version of the excellent Sonic Adventure on the Dreamcast. After all, it shares the same art style as that title, on the menus and box and stuff. Instead, what I got was a rehash of the Mega Drive version of Sonic 2.

As it turned out, that was awesome.

And it still is. Certainly, each level looks like a level from Sonic 2 – there’s your Emerald Hill zone, and your Aquatic Ruin zone, and your Metropolis Zone, but for the most part the levels have different layouts. They also all have new bosses, and Knuckles makes an appearance too.

"Knuckles you eediot!"
“Knuckles you eediot!”

There are reworked versions of the music from several different Sonic games, not just the second one, and the final stage more like the end of Sonic 3 and Knuckles than Sonic 2. Add to all this the hidden puzzle pieces hidden round the levels which you can collect and complete, and you can see why I loved it so much all them years ago. I think, bar remakes of Sonic 3 and Knuckles, Sonic the Hedgehog Pocket Adventure might be my favourite handheld Sonic title too.

Oh, and yes – I got all the Chaos Emeralds. I totally forgot the final one though, and had to redo the end boss to get it! That unlocked the final, final stage, which I also finished. Phew.
