Lightning Swords (Evercade): COMPLETED!

Posted on 10/03/2023 Written by deKay

Oh would you look at that. My Limited Edition Evercade EXP finally arrived! And with it, a bgt pile of games – some built-in, and two Arcade cartridges. So, what will I play? Why, Lightning Swords, a game I’ve never heard of, of course!

Imagine if Revenge of Shinobi was Rolling Thunder, and you’re most of the way towards what Lightning Swords is. A sideways scrolling swordy-slashy game with hundreds of identical foes and a few bosses. You can pick up powerups which appear to do nothing, and you can do special attacks by holding down the slash button for a bit. It’s not bad, but you can see how it’s designed to chew through all your 10ps.

Bafflingly, to jump you press up. Why? This isn’t an 8-bit computer game with a one-button Quickshot II – it’s an arcade game with as many buttons as you want! They could easily have made the Evercade version respond to a second button for jump, even if that were as well as up, but no. Feels unnecessarily fiddly.

But anyway. Done. It’s not the best game in the world but it was fine.

Note: screenshot isn’t mine, it’s from the Evercade site. Would be nice if you could screenshot on an Evercade!

Rod Land (Arcade): COMPLETED!

Posted on 31/07/2022 Written by deKay

Now this game I have heard of. It’s one of those single screen, clear out all the baddies games like Parasol Stars and Snow Bros, only in this one you grab them with your rod and then bash their brains out on the floor. As you do.

I had forgotten, however, that there were bosses! But, and like most of the rest of the game actually, they were surprisingly easy to beat.

A very happy jolly platformer with cute graphics. Not as good as Parasol Stars though.

64th Street: A Detective Story (Evercade): COMPLETED!

Posted on 31/07/2022 Written by deKay

Despite the name, there’s no actual detectiving in 64th Street. Sure, at the end of each level a wall of text comes up to say you found a clue to, uh, whatever the thing you’re supposed to be doing is, but actually, the game is 100% punching and kicking people. Because, it’s a Final Fight type game after all.

I’d never heard of it before, and, when I came to write this I’d already forgotten what game it was. But I do remember the gameplay and it’s fine. Nothing special, it’s not up there with Streets of Rage or Final Fight, but it’s fun enough even if it does nothing new and copies pretty much everything from those two games (which, to be fair, are very similar already!).

Ichidant-R (Switch): COMPLETED!

Posted on 22/12/2021 Written by deKay

When this came out, I played and completed it almost immediately. But, as I was looking for a two player game to play with my daughter – and that was a while back – I thought it’d be good to play again. And it was!

It’s a very different game when you’re playing it with someone, as it’s both competitive and co-op at the same time. You have to complete each mini-game to progress, but only one of you actually needs to do that so you compete to see who can do it first/best/whatever. This also has the knock-on effect of making the game even easier than it already was as you have effectively have twice as many chances to beat each game!

Double Dragon II: The Revenge (Evercade): COMPLETED!

Posted on 21/12/2021 Written by deKay

You know something? I’ve never been a big fan of Double Dragon. Sure, it’s OK. And yes, it’s one of the first arcade games I ever completed in an arcade (well, in a shed in a field), I don’t understand the reverence. It doesn’t have the fun of TMNT, or the style of Streets of Rage, or the depth of River City Ransom. But here we are.

The main reason for playing it was because my daughter wanted another two player game to play through after Wizard Fire and this was just there on my Evercade. Is it OK that she likes games where you punch people in the face? That’s fine, right?

So we played through it, used a billion credits on the end boss because that’s what happens in arcade games so they can extract the maximum number of ten pees from your pockets, and watched the ending. Hurrah?
