Doctor Who: An Unlikely Heist (iPad): COMPLETED!

Posted on 10/05/2023 Written by deKay

This is a bad game. Do not play.

You want more? Sigh. Fine. Doctor Who: An Unlikely Heist, which was renamed in an update to “Doctor Who: Hidden Mysteries” presumably because there was no unlikely heist in the game, is a hidden object game. I’ve no beef with hidden object games. They can be fun but they are very shallow, and usually, that’s fine. However, it’s not just a hidden object game because there’s a tenuous Doctor Who story here too, about some magical cloud which is turning things into the wrong things from another time period and The Doctor (the 13th one) and Yaz have to sort it out. How? By you finding a list of objects in various scenes to earn canisters of magic dust that you can then use to unlock the next bit of story.

See the map on the right? The big thing with the plans on it? That’s not the map.

Which, limited in scope as it sounds, in itself is OK, right? Nothing fancy, a bit of Who fan service (with trips to locations from the TV show, appearances from various aliens and even – for no discernible reason – the 10th Doctor), and finding stuff. The problem is, it goes on. And on. And on and on and on and on. Each tiny bit of story progression requires you to complete several levels to get the required number of canisters, with that number generally increasing as the game goes on. After 30 hours, probably more, I reached level 1023, only to discover that beyond that point the levels went into “endless” mode and no longer gave you magic dust, and there was still story to unlock. The game was broken.

Apparently he was in the show. I don’t remember him.

Thankfully, they updated it (and that’s when they changed the name), so I could finish it off, but it was so, so tedious getting there and certainly not worth it for the plot. Over 1000 levels to slog through, when they’re mostly the same thing. Sure, they mix in a few rule variations – they flip the scene horizontally, or have it so you have to find two of the same item at once, but it’s not hard (you have powerups to help you find objects – I never used them, never failed a level, never got close to running out of time) and it’s certainly not fun. It also doesn’t help that there’s no naming consistency (a bin is sometimes a trash can, or a rubbish bin, or in one case, a battery) and there’s US naming some of the time and others there isn’t. And this, this one really got me annoyed: A chess set is an “outlet”?!

So yes, bad game, do not play. I did so you don’t have to.

Lego Dimensions: Doctor Who (PS4): COMPLETED!

Posted on 03/01/2017 Written by deKay

And the first completed game of the new year is this. It’s another Lego Dimensions level pack, but it’s another good one. There’s timehopping and the inside of the TARDIS and a trip to Trenzalore and a London bus gets blown up and Peter Capaldi is excellent.

A TARDIS in a TARDIS. Of course!

You also get to build K9, and ride him while he fires lasers, which is pretty awesome too. So yes, well worth buying this particular expansion. To update my list, Adventure Time > Midway Arcade > Doctor Who > The Simpsons > Back to the Future.

The Doctor Who hub world is excellent too, if somewhat buggy (there are a number of areas where the floor just lets you drop through). There’s time travelling there too, and each time The Doctor dies he regenerates, cycling through all twelve Doctors. Yes I know it’s technically thirteen, but The War Doctor isn’t an option. Anyway, this in itself is fantastic but even better is how the interior of the TARDIS changes to match the incarnation of The Doctor. That’s some attention to detail – sadly missing from the solid geometry of the hub world… And Missy is in it too! It’s the level pack that just keeps giving.

Just look at it. LOOK. AT. IT.

In case you’re wondering, yes, I do have more levels packs to play. Ghostbusters (the original one) is here already, and Mission Impossible and Portal are both on the way.

No you have a problem.

I don’t know. How IS this possible?

TV – What I’m watching?

Posted on 14/05/2014 Written by gospvg

Currently I'm watching the following shows

Doctor Who - Hoping Capaldi takes the role into a more serious note.

Person of Interest - Very apt in the light of PRISM

Sherlock - The new series with Benedict Cumberbatch is must watch TV.

Hell on Wheels - Western series about the construction of the US railroad.

Game of Thrones - Dragons, Wars & the White Walkers are coming !!

Mentalist - Jane is a psychic and after getting revenge on Red John he has now joined the FBI.

Sons of Anarchy - The trials & tribulations of a motorcycle club in the town of Charming.

Justified - Starring Timothy Olyphant who done a great job on Deadwood plays the part of a Kentucky sheriff.

Walking Dead - Zombies, zombies & more zombies !!

Arrow - Superhero shooting um ... arrows?

Big Bang Theory - The best comedy show since The IT Crowd.

Grimm - Just started watching this recently it's about supernatural beings and an investigate cop who can see them.

Revolution - Annoyingly has been cancelled after Season 2, I've watched Season 1 so will continue watching.

Rectify - After spending years on death row, Daniel is let out & returns to his hometown. This is really good the first series was only six episodes but I enjoyed it.

I've watched  a lot of tv series over the years Breaking Bad & Deadwood were amazing, Lost I got  um lost..? Fawlty Towers & IT Crowd are brilliantly funny but nothing annoys me more than when the US TV networks don't renew a series I am enjoying like Revolution, Jericho, Pushing Daisies, Terminator Sarah Connor Chronicles, Stargate Universe & of course X-Files. This is why I usually never watch a new TV series until I know it has been renewed for Season 2. I wish the US networks would give a show they want to cancel a six episode final season run to tie up loose ends.

95: Bother Me Anatomically
byugvm

Unforeseen circumstances, and definitely not Podcast Apathy, resulted in just deKay and Kendrick bringing you this episode, but don’t worry! As a bonus to make up for the cast shortfall, Episode 95 is slightly shorter, so you’ve less to endure! Rejoice.

This time around, your heroes discuss the general meh-ness of recent gaming news, the Switch 2 having no games, a new Lego Batman (and Batman in general), and Ys X Proud Nordics. With, naturally, many deviations and diversions.
