Sonic the Hedgehog (MS): COMPLETED!

Impossible.

Sonic the Hedgehog on the Master System was, at the time, quite an achievement. It may not have been as technically polished as the Mega Drive original, but it was a good approximation given the more limited hardware, and it steered away from simply being very, very fast by focussing more on the platforming. I quite enjoyed it at the time.

It has been quite a long time (read: over a decade, I expect) since I last played 8bit Sonic the Hedgehog, and several things surprised me: It was just as easy as I recall. It stands up better today than I expected. Mostly, I was amazed at how I still remembered where all of the hidden Chaos Emeralds were. Except for the one in Scrap Brain Zone which I stumbled across, luckily.

Those electricity pylons are really weedy compared to the Megadrive ones.

It’s a fun platformer with some excellent music (Jungle Zone was always my favourite, and still is) and one of the best games of its type on the Master System. When you compare it, technically, to earlier games like Psycho Fox and Alex Kidd (both still excellent) this does things unheard of on the console at the time.

And that’s it completed, with all the Chaos Emeralds in tow. Excellent.

Professor Layton vs Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney: off to a land of magic

I found it difficult to understand, when I first heard about this crossover game, how they would meld together the long-form deduction of the Phoenix Wright games with the staccato unrelated puzzle form of the Layton games.  I needn't have worried, since the development team evidently didn't either - they have, instead, divided the game into chapters, and so far these run alternately between the two game styles.

The overall story is quite fantastical, which fits to an extent with the Layton games but is a departure from the Wright stories (even taking into account spirit medium visions and so on).  It starts off quite normally, in London, with some nice tie backs to previous games in both series.


However, both sets of characters have now been transported to a town which appears to have its fate decided by a storyteller.  Phoenix and Maya appear to be bakers, but they have taken on the job of defending a character in the courts anyway.


The court cases seem a little weaker and less humorous than the Wright games; the puzzles and overworld exploration are less detailed than the Layton games.  Indeed, it feels at times that the game is relying on drawing from past references a little too much.


And that's a problem, because this is a clear example where a game can work as a marketing tool, trying to sell the Wright game format to the millions who have only played Layton on their DSs.  More interesting cases and obvious links to the puzzles would have done that.

Maybe it'll improve.  I've only just finished the first legal case in Labyrinthia, which ended with a gory execution by fire.  I shall have to hope it keeps my attention.

Lara Croft Temple of Osiris – Completed

Our first PS4 PMG completed, the last boss fight was much easier than I thought. No idea about the plot Egyptian gods fighting against each other or something but it was an decent twin stick shooter with a few puzzles.

Twin stick shooters unfortunately seem to be the norm for most 4 player games, there really should be more choice by now.

We still have Gauntlet & Helldivers to play but next on the play list is the daddy of them all Diablo 3.

Capitals – Rolling Thunder

Finally managed to get the rolling thunder achievement in Capitals by winning eight games on the trot.

Current game stats are 291 games played with 173 wins at 59% win ratio.

Longest word is Sectionally.

Assassin’s Creed Unity (PS4)

Obligatory “I can see my house from here”.

It’s more Assassin’s Creed! Yay! My favourite series of neck-stabbing games. I’d heard a lot of bad things about this entry, and so waited until it was cheap enough to risk. £10 in this case, and so far, it’s been just fine. The story isn’t that good however, and Arno seems to have fake conviction to carry out his tasks. He doesn’t seem too bothered about the death of his father so the only reason he joins the Brotherhood is because he has nowhere else to go. And his girlfriend is a Templar! Good grief.

At least Paris is excellent to run around and explore and climb and stuff. That’s the best bit of Assassin’s Creed games anyway. Stopping crimes in the street, finding hidden stuff, and opening chests – all this is good stuff. The fighting is improved over previous games, and it looks astounding, especially when you synchronise from a vantage point. The climbing requires less precision too, making getting around a bit more fluid, and being able to quickly climb down stuff as well as up stuff is a massive improvement.

As far as progress goes, I’m a few hours in and have “grown up”, joined the Brotherhood, and started renovating a theatre. Arno is a bit angry we weren’t allowed to kill the guy who killed his girlfriend’s dad (who was Grand Master of the Templar Order in Paris, so killing his killer seems an odd move for an Assassin), but he’s been given another chance to do so now, which I’m about to begin. Once I’ve done this theatre stuff. And climbed around some more.
