Things I’ve been playing recently (Part 2 – PS+ Stuff)

Posted on 29/06/2015 Written by deKay

Lots of PS+ stuff has been building up over the last few weeks. I’ve played most of them (except the PS4 games, obviously), so here are some thoughts.

tumblr_noo3xkiczm1svmpf2o1_1280Race the Sun (Vita)

It’s a bit dull, really. It’s sort of like Deathchase but with upgrades and nothing to shoot. I’ve played it for an hour or so but it’s not grabbing me.

Tower of Guns (PS3)

A nonsensical FPS where you progress through randomly generated levels containing lots, and lots of guns. Looks a bit rough but is surprisingly good fun. The way the abilities and weapons unlock are a bit of a pain though.

tumblr_noo3yawnnb1svmpf2o1_1280Murasaki Baby (Vita)

Impossible to control. You can’t realistically use the front and back touch panels of the Vita at the same time (in fact, I’d argue you can’t use the back at all even by itself), so I’m not going to get anywhere with this. It sort of looks nice, but it’s unplayable.

tumblr_noo4116vri1svmpf2o1_1280MonsterBag (Vita)

It feels a bit like a point and click adventure game, but it’s too random and vague how you progress. Not really enjoying this either, so that’s in the bin now.

tumblr_npl64hy0wp1svmpf2o1_1280Futuridium EP Deluxe (Vita)

Like a cross between Race the Sun and Uridium (which it “borrows” for its name), but not as much fun as either. Like Race the Sun you fly into the screen, like Uridium you fly over (and under, and through) various, er, spaceships? and shoot things. The things you shoot are often hidden. You have to find them all in time or you die. It isn’t good at all.

tumblr_npl7gqesmg1svmpf2o1_1280Super Exploding Zoo (Vita)

A puzzle game with a great premise, but flawed execution. Rescue exploding animals from aliens, using them to blow up walls and sacrifice themselves to defeat the aliens. Thing is, different animals have different skills and there’s no way to tell, say, the penguins to kill themselves for the cause without also telling the monkeys – who you may need later to climb a wall. Far too many times did I die due to not having enough control. Ah well.

New Game – The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt

Posted on 29/06/2015 Written by gospvg

After completing Battlefield Hardline I had nothing else to play & was a bit unsure about what to purchase. Asking fellow gamers on rllmuk two games got mention quite a bit Bloodborne & The Witcher 3.

I did not enjoy Dark Souls on the 360 & I don't enjoy playing excessively gory & potentially scary games. So I ordered The Witcher 3 along with Far Cry 4 (mainly to give Abbas something to enjoy) & DriveClub (I'm itching for a racing game, have not played one on the PS4.

DriveClub & Far Cry 4 have not been delivered but The Witcher 3 was waiting for me when I got back from work on Friday.

Over the weekend I have enjoyed making potions, swimming underwater for treasure, killing ghouls, finding a lost frying pan, getting scared by a noonwraith, collecting herbs & hunting a griffin.

I did have reservations about the game because of Skyrim. I thought I was done with medieval style rpgs but boy how wrong could I be, the Witcher 3 is an amazing game & I'm only still in the first location.

I've got a couple of side quests to complete before I turn in for my main quest & some locations I need to check for loot. Really wish we had a three day weekend so I could play the game some more.

Earth Defense Force 2017 Portable (Vita): COMPLETED!

Posted on 28/06/2015 Written by deKay

tumblr_nqpenibnaj1svmpf2o1_1280Way back when, I played the Xbox 360 version of this and really rather enjoyed it. It was really shoddy, the console couldn’t cope with the number of baddies, the graphics were terrible, the animation and audio was awful, and by rights it should never have made it out of Japan at all. But there was something about it, despite all that, which made it enjoyable and addictive.

Last week, the portable version, on the Vita (a console even less capable of running it than the 360) was on sale on the PSN store for just £3.75, and with the price I paid for my PSN credit, that came down even lower to just £3. Rude not to, right?

tumblr_nqpermqgxt1svmpf2o1_1280What I hadn’t realised is that this version is actually a beefed up version of the 360 original. It’s the same game, but with a few new levels, some new weapons, a new (well, borrowed from a different EDF game) character to play as, and I’m pretty sure some new enemy variants too. Excellent.

And in 12 short game hours, I’d completed it. Hooked from start to finish.

tumblr_nqpes0rnv61svmpf2o1_1280Like before, I don’t think I ever found a perfect pair of weapons for any of the levels. It made it a bit of pain when you’d realised that a short range homing “shrapnel” missile and an assault rifle worked best, only to have a different enemy spawn in later in the level and I’d then find I’d nothing to take it down. I also found, constantly, that weapons for “mechanical” enemies do not make good weapons for “insect” enemies, so balancing what to take into a fight with both types was a challenge. Still, I managed it.

And with the mothership destroyed and the whole of humanity in ruins, that was that. EDF! EDF!

Battlefield Hardline – Completed

Posted on 25/06/2015 Written by gospvg

With only ten episodes, you can very quickly complete the game if you play a few episodes every evening. Just like binge-watching any tv show, I binge-played through all the episodes to complete the game.

I arrested all the warrants & collected all the evidence to complete the case files.

I did encounter one bug on episode eight where I died at a particular section & the game went into a checkpoint loading loop. I had to quit & restart the episode, thankfully it remembered all the evidence I had collected & warrants completed.

It was short but an enjoyable experience, I've no interest in the multiplayer so onto the next game.

I'm got nothing left on the shelf to play (maybe I should have kept Dragon Age to try for myself) with only Destiny & Fifa 14 so time to buy some games. I've decided to go with Far Cry 4, DriveClub & The Witcher 3 which should hopefully keep me busy until September.

Borderlands: stuck in New Haven

Posted on 24/06/2015 Written by Xexyz

Well, there and Rust Commons.  It feels like we made little progress tonight, for once not because John spent the entire session choosing between two identical guns, but because we struggled to make progress past the spiderants and other foes.  In fact, we only managed to complete three missions, and unlock five more.  We need to increase our firepower somewhat!

96: Magic Beans
byugvm

What is this word “late” which you are saying? I do not recognise it and I do not understand it and I do not wish to believe it exists! Episode 96 cannot be late, for it was never scheduled. Sir, you embarrass yourself.

Arguments about timetabling aside, we would like to invite you to enjoy this most recent (at time of typing) episode of your favourite podcast! deKay, Kendrick and Orrah huddled round a warm bucket of cocoa and discussed, to varying lengths, the important news of our time – including Nintendo’s Mario Direct, more unfortunate developers losing their jobs because Money, Microsoft increasing the price of Game Pass (again, because Money) and Starbreeze getting several years into developing an eagerly anticipated Dungeons & Dragons game before pulling the plug because, well, Money. Thankfully, there’s some Good Stuff too, like chat about these games.
