Too many games!

Posted on 15/04/2015 Written by choobs

It’s getting ridiculous. It really is. After my prolonged ennui – in part caused by a lack of anything new and interesting and in part by my ridiculous Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate obsession – I’ve found myself up to my eyes in amazing titles. Admittedly, this is at least partly down to the magnificence of the new 3ds and the PS4, but regardless I’m struggling to keep up. My list of “Things that I’m actually playing right now” currently looks a bit like this:

  1. Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate (3DS)
  2. Xenoblade Chronicles (3DS)
  3. Tomb Raider Definitive Edition (PS4)
  4. Toukiden: Kiwami (PS4, Vita)
  5. Final Fantasy X Remastered (Vita)
  6. Elite Dangerous (Mac)
  7. Apotheon (PS4)
  8. Don’t Starve (PS4)

On top of these, titles which I’m kinda sorta playing but have been distracted from are (wait for it)

  1. Alien Isolation (PS4)
  2. Bloodborne (PS4 – not even started!)
  3. Destiny (PS4)
  4. Dragon Age Origins (PS4)
  5. Evil Within (PS4)
  6. Shadows of Mordor (PS4)
  7. Heroes of the Storm (Mac)

On top of that, on the 3DS alone there are another dozen games and about half that amount on the Vita that have fallen by the wayside. The problem here is I’m doing too many at once. The trouble is that things like MH4U, Elite, Heroes of the Storm and so on are as near open-ended as they get. So in order to dig my way out of the mess, I’m going to focus on two games at a time and try my damnedest NOT TO BUY ANY MORE (until No Man’s Sky comes out). To keep me honest, I’m going to get back to my Game Diary entries before I drown in it all. So here’s the rules: at any one time I’m allowed to be playing a “standard” game and a long-term game. Long term games I’m allowed to play for an arbitrary number of days before switching to another one, but “standard” games need to be completed before I start (or continue) another one.

So – my current “standard” game is Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition” (which, I might add, is exceptional.

Mario Party 10 – Bowser Time

Posted on 14/04/2015 Written by gospvg

Sunday afternoon was family gaming, so time to dust off the WiiU & play Mario Party 10.

Mario Party 10 makes a change from the previous games in that the players work as a team instead of individuals to reach the  goal.

I've enjoyed playing the Bowser Mode where I was Bowser using the gamepad to chase down the other players via mini-games I tried to destroy hearts they own to eliminate them from the game & reaching the end goal.

We tried out the three maps which is a bit limited considering I remember previous games having 6+ maps but overall It's another good family Nintendo release.

New Game – Assassin’s Creed Unity

Posted on 13/04/2015 Written by gospvg

I tried Metro Redux but I just could not get into it, not sure why but I was not enjoying it. So I went with Assassin's Creed Unity instead, Paris looks lovely & thankfully the game has been patched a million times so I've had no issues playing.

Yes it's more of the same but I'm enjoying it so far running around Paris rooftops. This time round you play as Arno, so far he has experienced his father dying, being adopted by a Grand Master (Templar) who is also murdered with Arno being accused & thrown into Jail.

Yes it is the same old formula with the map fully loaded with icons etc but it's enjoyable pleasure getting the various viewpoints, taking part in a crowd event & lock-picking the odd chest or door. It's a formula that Ubisoft have used for quite a few years in many games but the story is what changes, this is what keeps me interested & coming back to the AC Series.

I've played quite a bit of the game now onto Sequence 4, the story moves along at a swift pace but I've taken time out to focus on the Cafe Theatre side missions & upgrade my various weapons & armour.

CounterSpy – Completed

Posted on 13/04/2015 Written by gospvg

Completed CounterSpy over the weekend, great little indie game. It does get tougher towards the end with stronger enemies & an increase in the numbers. I then tried Never Alone but just did not enjoy the gameplay mechanics, it looks lovely but is more a documentary first & game second. I've still got a few more indie games to enjoy but for now it's Assassin's Creed Unity.

Azure Striker Gunvolt (3DS): COMPLETED!

Posted on 12/04/2015 Written by deKay

tumblr_nmcm5xjrxh1svmpf2o1_400Aside from a couple of bosses, and the “water chasing you up the tower” level (which I realised I was doing wrong – you can wall jump and fall slowly when you’re sparking), I managed to get to the penultimate level of the game without too much trouble. Then I hit a wall.

A SuckySuck Bit(TM) wall. That’s right folks: a boss rush.

tumblr_nmcm79mhfa1svmpf2o1_400I suppose I was expecting it. After all, Gunvolt isa follow-up of sorts to Mega Man, and Boss Rushes are a Mega Man cliché. And it was hard, too. After scraping past the first boss, there was a second one. I was praying it was just the two, or at least that there’d be a restart point after the first, but no – straight into the second boss without so much as a heal or recovery of your skill points. So I died.

tumblr_nmcm6jps3e1svmpf2o1_400And I died a lot. Over and over. Mostly on the second boss (the green one with the spikes that turn into drills or lasers). I decided to go back and complete a few earlier levels again, to level up (I went from about 24 to 35 in the end) but also to get material to generate better gear for Gunvolt – such as faster EP recovery or better shielding. After that, I returned to the boss rush and seemed to be faring little better.

Then, on one attempt, I beat the second boss with a tiny sliver of health left, no skill points, and no chance at all of defeating a third boss. Please don’t be a third boss. Oh. There’s a third boss.

tumblr_nmcm734zmi1svmpf2o1_400Thankfully, somehow, I wiped him out in double-quick time. One skill point regenerated soon after the fight began and I used it to replenish some health. Luckily the boss was the one who creates columns of fire on either side of the screen, and he was really easy. Phew! But… a fourth boss?

No. Well, yes, but not before a restart point. And other boss after that, again with a restart point that went unused as they were easy. Onto the final level!

tumblr_nmcm7drrpd1svmpf2o1_400After a short corridor and a room with loads of simply to defeat minions, it was the final boss. Who was really difficult. It took many, many attempts to see him off (then of course, I realised all I needed to do was use my EV shield to negate his shield, making him much easier) and he changed form into a huge robot thing. Sigh – another Irritating and Unnecessary Gaming Cliché. More so in that he appeared to be impossible to beat, and one attack (which blows you off the platform seemingly with no way to avoid it prevent it) was incredibly frustrating.

tumblr_nmp3lshaaj1svmpf2o1_400Many attempts, requiring the previous form to be beaten again first, were had, and then I realised the “trick” – target the left and right sides of the robot, then use your EV shield to negate his shield in the middle, then target that, then spark all three targets at once. Knowing that, he went down quickly. The end!

Except the end wasn’t a happy end at all. Spoilers, obviously, so I won’t say what happens, but I think you need to do something before the final boss. Probably involving collecting gems, of which I think there are six, and I stumbled across one. More to do then!

Azure Striker Gunvolt is a fantastic game, and I’m pleased they’ve announced a sequel already as I do really want to play more of this sort of thing!

96: Magic Beans
byugvm

What is this word “late” which you are saying? I do not recognise it and I do not understand it and I do not wish to believe it exists! Episode 96 cannot be late, for it was never scheduled. Sir, you embarrass yourself.

Arguments about timetabling aside, we would like to invite you to enjoy this most recent (at time of typing) episode of your favourite podcast! deKay, Kendrick and Orrah huddled round a warm bucket of cocoa and discussed, to varying lengths, the important news of our time – including Nintendo’s Mario Direct, more unfortunate developers losing their jobs because Money, Microsoft increasing the price of Game Pass (again, because Money) and Starbreeze getting several years into developing an eagerly anticipated Dungeons & Dragons game before pulling the plug because, well, Money. Thankfully, there’s some Good Stuff too, like chat about these games.
