New Game – Letter Quest

Posted on 02/05/2014 Written by gospvg

I know I have enough to play already with Trials Frontier & Tiny Dice Dungeon but tried Letter Quest yesterday & got hooked.

It's a letter based game in which you create words to attack monsters across various stages. Every so often you will encounter a more difficult boss fight. There are three challenges to each stage; normal, time challenge & hard difficulty. Each rewarding you with more gems.

You can use these gems to purchase upgrades to basic stats like health, attack, defence or you can purchase new skill books to equip & learn.

It does have in-app purchases for a gem doubler, bonus store unlock & various quantities of gems. I'm not inclined to want to purchase any of these thus making the game easier but there is an in-app purchase for a donate which I will feel obliged to purchase if I carry on enjoying the game.

Unlike Trials Frontier or Tiny Dice Dungeon it has no wait timers thus I was playing for quite a bit yesterday evening.

The game itself is surprisingly free & so far I have not come across any paywall forcing me down the route to in-app purchase.

The developers website http://www.baconbanditgames.com/ is also a very good read & the blog posts go into quite a bit of detail on the development of the game.

The game is also on Steam Greenlight

NES Remix 2 (Wii U): COMPLETED

Posted on 01/05/2014 Written by deKay

FINALLYI loved the original NES Remix. Even though several of the included games were, er, not of the best quality (Pinball, Clu-Clu Land, Urban Champion, Golf), the package was fun and the challenges were great. Getting Remix 2 was always going to happen.

And it happened! And all was good.

404The selection of titles this time round seems much better. That’s not surprising as Nintendo have picked some later NES titles for this sequel – Metroid, Super Mario Bros 2 (and 3), Zelda II, Kirby’s Adventure, and what I believe is what the final official NES game, Wario’s Woods.

If you’ve played the first Remix, you know what to expect here. The bulk of the game is made up from playing short sections of the NES games, often with different rules (take no damage, collect X coins, you can’t jump, etc.). The rest of the game is taken up with remix levels.

Here, the games are modified more severely, such as being all in black and white, or the screen is upside down, but some are mashed up with other games. Collect all the coins in a Mario level, as Samus, for example. Disappointingly, and like the first game, these mash up levels aren’t as frequent as you’d hope. There are more in this outing, but still very few.

Nope.It is great, and technically – due to the better game selection – it should be better than the original, but it falls a little short. One reason is that it is generally a lot harder. Perhaps some people wanted this, but I found the first game just about hard enough. Here, I’m struggling to get even two stars on some challenges, whereas I got three stars without to much difficulty (comparatively) on most of Remix 1. A Kirby challenge where you can’t deflate, and a Punch-Out!! one where you have to beat a super powered Glass Joe (quickly!) almost caused the death of my gamepad.

Another reason is there doesn’t seem to be as many games. I’ve not counted, but I’m sure there aren’t. Certainly, in the unlocked Bonus section, there’s just one – the terrible Ice Hockey game. I’m sure the original had more.

Secret_Weegi__That_s_two_I_ve_seen_now.__yearofluigiFinally, there’s the many Mario challenges. We’ve already done Super Mario Bros, so adding The Lost Levels here doesn’t really feel like adding a new game – it’s just a retread.

Having said that, there are two pretty big additions to this iteration. Firstly, despite just missing out on The Year of Luigi, is the inclusion of Super Luigi Bros. Sure, it’s just Super Mario Bros, but mirrored horizontally so you now run right to left instead of left to right. Luigi’s physics more closely match his strange jump movement of more recent games too.

Super_Weegi_BrosSecondly, there’s Championship Mode. Here, three challenges are thrown at you and when you complete them you’re put on a worldwide leaderboard. It’s supposedly set up to resemble ye olde Nintendo Championships, and works well. There’s only one set of three challenges so far, but I presume others will follow.

As you can see from the title of this post, I’ve completed NES Remix 2.  I don’t have all the stars (I’ve about 410 overall, I’m not sure how many there are in total – I’d guess around 500), but I’ve completed every challenge in the game and unlocked all the Remix and Bonus challenges (and beaten them, too).

Worst._Challenge._Ever.It’s definitely worth a purchase, and certainly a lot of fun, but some better challenge choices and more work on mashups would have bumped it up the “needometer” a little. The replay option (you can even replay how people who posted on Miiverse played, which is nice) is a great addition but ultimately doesn’t fix the few slight issues.

And the challenge where all you have to do is watch the “how to play” demo on Kirby’s Adventure? What? Who thought that would be a good idea?

Earth Defense Force 2017 Portable: they’re spitting acid!

Posted on 30/04/2014 Written by Xexyz

It's just like the 360 game.  That's great.  I've played the first ten levels on normal, and am now trying them on harder difficulties just to try and find better weapons.  I'm dying a lot.

Dead Island Riptide – It’s all about the mods

Posted on 30/04/2014 Written by gospvg

Not posted about Dead Island Riptide since the New Game post so a quick update.

Dead Island Riptide fun factor comes from the various mods you can collect throughout the game.

These are found scattered around the island & you need a base weapon with some materials to create the mod from any workbench.

I created a High Voltage (upgraded version of the shock mod) in the recent PMG with a Sugar Cane Knife some duct tape, wire, battery & electronic scrap. It does a very nice 1000+ damage.

I also collected a Medieval mod yesterday but I don't have a base weapon to create this yet.

The story is progressing along we are on chapter 7 having gone through some tunnels to face a boss fight against The Wrestler. Lots of fire damage & grenades helped us bring him down.

Arriving at the ferry station we were met by thugs who wanted to take all our gear, that ended in them meeting a 'group fury' & getting pummeled to death.

New Game – Tiny Dice Dungeon

Posted on 29/04/2014 Written by gospvg

Tiny Dice Dungeon ticks all the many RPG boxes with monsters, quests, experience points, boss fights & inventory management.

Your weapon of choice though is the DICE !!

Depending on what you roll will decide how much damage, healing or other special attack damage you can deal to your enemies.

If you roll a 1 however you will miss your turn. You can catch monsters to train & fight alongside you through the various quests. After a few stages of dungeons you will encounter a boss fight & once you have defeated your MIGHTY (& I mean MIGHTY) foe. You will have saved another villager which unlocks another shop or feature in the game.

The world map seems quite small but the dungeons soon become challenging thus requiring you to revisit the earlier stages to do some grinding to level up your character & monsters. This grinding does not feel like a chore because it gives you the opportunity to capture new monsters, collect & equip new items & find shards from defeated monsters.

To add the game does have wait mechanics (countdown timers) for your players stamina to reset. This does not bother me because I don't get more than five or ten minutes to play during a day.

96: Magic Beans
byugvm

What is this word “late” which you are saying? I do not recognise it and I do not understand it and I do not wish to believe it exists! Episode 96 cannot be late, for it was never scheduled. Sir, you embarrass yourself.

Arguments about timetabling aside, we would like to invite you to enjoy this most recent (at time of typing) episode of your favourite podcast! deKay, Kendrick and Orrah huddled round a warm bucket of cocoa and discussed, to varying lengths, the important news of our time – including Nintendo’s Mario Direct, more unfortunate developers losing their jobs because Money, Microsoft increasing the price of Game Pass (again, because Money) and Starbreeze getting several years into developing an eagerly anticipated Dungeons & Dragons game before pulling the plug because, well, Money. Thankfully, there’s some Good Stuff too, like chat about these games.
