To the Moon: confusing

Posted on 18/02/2014 Written by Xexyz

A real roller coaster of emotions, answering more questions and causing more confusion.  This is starting to get into the region of proper spoilers now, so I'm going to hide the rest of this post.  If you want to experience this for yourself, don't read on.

So, it turns out that John did know of River's condition.  It's not entirely made clear what is wrong with her, but it's some form of Aspergers since the doctor recommends a book by Tony Attwood.  I was upset by John's refusal to read the book - sticking his head in the same, hoping that it would just go away.  That was never going to be a good thing.

Further back in time, and we find John asking River out for the first time.  John's friend Nicolas is a bit of a dick - but, her, he's a teenage boy.

But then again, John is also a bit of a dick.  He doesn't want to go out with River because he likes her, he wants to go out with her because he thinks it'll make him more interesting.  And with that, the whole nature of their relationship changes.  In later years, is John buying his head in the sand - or does he just not care?  has he grown to love River, or tolerate her?  The clues indicate there is some affection there at least - he wouldn't have built the house and shouldered the responsibility of finances otherwise - but did he really fight against her dying wish to restore Anya at the cost of her medical bills?

Following this, there were some comedic moments.  The researchers' work didn't work, they popped in and out of John's memories trying to plant the seeds of inspiration, but they didn't take.

Evidently, we hadn't gone far enough back.  After introducing the smell of roadkill to dying John (and following a tense revival by the doctor), we were able to move back to see John as a young child.

Not just John, though.  We met his twin brother, Joey.  His mum didn't call John 'Joey' as a nickname, she called him by that name as her mind had confused the two boys, after she reversed her car and killed John's brother.  A huge tragedy in the family, setting the path for the future in stone.

I think I must be near the end now.  This reveal of John's brother has been a huge shock, and really changes the way I had considered him.  More soon.

Danger Boat – Endless Danger

Posted on 18/02/2014 Written by gospvg

From the developer that gave us the amazing Disc Drivin comes Danger Boat. Watch out for rocks, bombs, submarines & other obstacles in your way whilst piloting your boat.

Avoiding all these whilst collecting coins & powerups will rack up your score. You can then spend the acquired gold in the shop purchasing boosts, upgrades or new boats.

By completing various missions you can increase your multiplier, some of these are challenging like a high score target.

My current stats are

Best Distance 1,364
Best Score 14,040

Pocket Mine – Rainbow Chest

Posted on 18/02/2014 Written by gospvg

When you unlock the factory you can use 5 diamond chests & 4 Orb cubes to upgrade to a Rainbow Chest. To get green orbs you need to demolish an artifact which is annoying.

But I had to try at least once to see what treasure I would get from a rainbow chest.

You also need 17 coins to unlock a chest which you can get from completing bonus missions or exchanging rubies.

Super Bomb was my reward 100% more bomb crates with 15% more power.

KABOOM !!

Army of Two – Co-op Carnage

Posted on 18/02/2014 Written by gospvg

Not had much time to play much gaming the past week on the consoles but I did get some time to co-op with Abbas on Army of Two.

The game has a mission based structure with some taking longer than others (especially if we die & have to respawn to the last checkpoint). There have been some nice gameplay moments which include a nice driving section with the other player on a mounted gun & a slide down a hallway with a building exploding (reminds of some gameplay I saw on Bulletstorm).

The game seems to have done away with the back to back feature from the previous game which had you taking out a large number of enemies whilst having your back to your co-op partner.

Earlier in the game there was a mission set in the past in which we rescued a hostage named Fiona who we now meet up five years later & she informs us of the cartel's hideout which is in a church.

The Wonderful 101 (Wii U): COMPLETED!

Posted on 17/02/2014 Written by deKay

tumblr_n17nb1ocvt1svmpf2o1_1280A concerted effort over the last few days has paid off, and I’ve managed to complete The Wonderful 101!

I really enjoyed it. It’s mental, but it’s so much fun to play. OK, so the number of times you fight the same baddies is perhaps a bit too high, and drawing Unite Morphs in a narrow or enclosed space is sometimes a little tricky, but there’s just too much to love about it.

It’s so bright and happy, with plenty of funny conversations (like Red’s ability to remember and repeat everything he’s told, Green and Black having a wager on who would win “mumble mumble mumble something something with Pink” if they destroyed more bad guys than the other, and so on), and somehow manages to be a little dark and sinister too. The way the action ramps up (as does the size of the foes) towards the end of the game is brilliant – when you realise that Platinum Robo dwarfs your team, but he then is essentially microscopic compared to other enemies later on. Amazing.

The levels are varied too, with some isometric shooter sections, a couple of Rez-like into-the-screen bits (complete with lockons), and even a few bosses you have to beat Punch-Out!! style.

Yep._Platinum_are_definitely_Power_Rangers_fans.I should mention the number of references to Platinum (the team who made the game) too, as there are a lot. Platinum Robo itself wears the developers’ logo on its head, and the massive super computer that controls Earth’s defence shield is called “Mother Platinum”, and is the shape of the “Platinum 4 Point Star”. You even collect said stars as powerups in some of the levels, and there are 5 hidden Platinum Coins on each level as well.

Sadly, there’s one nasty fly in the ointment. Each “Operation” is made up of three sections (A, B and C), with each of these covering many missions (destroy a large enemy, traverse a dangerous bit, solve a puzzle, etc.). Each of the three Operation sections takes, roughly, 20-30 minutes. The problem is, that the game only saves after each section, not after each smaller mission (even though the game actually says it’s saving, and the manual says it does so). What it seems to do is save your record for that mission, with your score and rating, but not actually your progress. This means there’s 30 minutes between save points. Which is bad.

What is worse, though, is the final Operation section – 009C. It’s not 30 minutes long, being final boss after final boss (he has something like 5 or 6 forms, plus other bits and cutscenes between them). In fact, it took me almost three hours. That’s too long without a save point, took me well past my bedtime, and soured what should have been an epic final battle as I was rushing to get it done.

Still, this probably would only be an issue if you don’t have the time, or you’re shooting for high scores so have to do the 3 hour final run over and over (because you get a terrible rating if you die), but it’s something they should have fixed. Why no “quick save” after every mission, Platinum? You craft such a fantastic game and then threaten to ruin it with a silly decision. Oh well.

96: Magic Beans
byugvm

What is this word “late” which you are saying? I do not recognise it and I do not understand it and I do not wish to believe it exists! Episode 96 cannot be late, for it was never scheduled. Sir, you embarrass yourself.

Arguments about timetabling aside, we would like to invite you to enjoy this most recent (at time of typing) episode of your favourite podcast! deKay, Kendrick and Orrah huddled round a warm bucket of cocoa and discussed, to varying lengths, the important news of our time – including Nintendo’s Mario Direct, more unfortunate developers losing their jobs because Money, Microsoft increasing the price of Game Pass (again, because Money) and Starbreeze getting several years into developing an eagerly anticipated Dungeons & Dragons game before pulling the plug because, well, Money. Thankfully, there’s some Good Stuff too, like chat about these games.
