Psycho Soldier (Steam Deck): COMPLETED!

Posted on 21/02/2024 Written by deKay

Another game off that SNK 40th Anniversary Collection thing I found Prehistoric Isle on. The game title really doesn’t match anything in the game itself, which is a platform shooter starring Athena (the SNK girl who is in a few of their games) and there aren’t any soldiers, psycho or otherwise. And you know what? I really enjoyed it!

It’s quirky, very different to other superficially similar titles from the same era, and Athena sings her theme tune as you play. Incredible work on a system which presumably had a pretty simple sound chip that plays samples rather than the ability to play back digital audio files like you’d get today. You also turn into a dragon for some reason every now and then.

Surprisingly, Psycho Soldier wasn’t impossible without infinite credits. In fact, I even managed to complete a few levels without dying at all. Unheard of for an arcade game, especially one I’d never played.

Prehistoric Isle (Steam Deck): COMPLETED!

Posted on 21/02/2024 Written by deKay

I totally forgot (again, I expect) that I had access to that SNK game collection on my Steam Deck. I think it came from Amazon original, so isn’t Steam-native, so maybe that’s why. Anyway, stumbled across it again and had a look, and Prehistoric Isle caught my eye. So I completed it.

Standard Arcade Shooter Disclaimer applies: yes, I used All The Credits. These games are designed to swallow 10ps, so I’ve no shame in pumping it full of virtual coinage in order to progress. Especially in a game which, although not bad, isn’t really good enough for me to spend long enough Gitting Gud on so that the not-real money I’m spending on extra continues can be saved.

As you’ve probably guessed, Prehistoric Isle is a side scrolling shooter in the vein of Gradius and R-Type only this time most of the baddies are dinosaurs and, Flintstones historical accuracy style, cavemen. Which means, realistically, the majority are some sort of pterosaur because none of the others can fly. Bosses are big ol’ dinos as you’d expect.

Shooty-wise, you get a few powerups with the usual Option-like orbiting thingie, which you can – if you’re able to do so without dying – rotate around your plane in order to shoot in different directions or with different attack types and arcs. Apart from a couple of vertically scrolling sections I found this more trouble than it’s worth so just left it at “forwards”.

I’ve said before that except in rare circumstances, shoot ’em ups aren’t really for me, and although this one is fine – and I liked the change in setting to the usual space/WWII stuff – it’s nothing fantastic.

Subsurface (Steam Deck): COMPLETED!

Posted on 20/02/2024 Written by deKay

For clarity, the specific game called “Subsurface” that I’m talking about is the cute little Metroidvania for the Pico-8 fantasy console. It’s a fun, short, platformer/shooter with a few upgrades (like being able to swim, or glide) that allow you to access previously inaccessible areas. Er, like any other Metroidvania.

This one, being on the Pico-8, has tiny pixel graphics but the main character is clearly a miniature Samus Aran clone with that colour scheme!

Not a difficult game by any means, but a really well coded wee thing.

February 2024 Update – Ichiban goes to Hawaii

Posted on 17/02/2024 Written by gospvg

Playing NOW

Like A Dragon Infinite Wealth (PS5)

Easily my most anticipated release this year, Like A Dragon Infinite Wealth does not disappoint. Back with another adventure with Ichiban & Kiryu also decides to tag along.

It took me a while to get familiar with the turn-based combat after enjoying all the previous action based games since Ichiban's first game. It has a nice quick smackdown feature similar to the Persona "All Out Attack" where you can wipe out lower levelled enemies with a press of the L2 button.

The mini-games are as always great timesinks and I am enjoying Sujimon & Dondoko Island.

Fortnite (PS5)

A mid-season update has dropped a TMNT (teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) mini-battle pass which unlocks a shredder skin, I have also completed the Solid Snake challenges and unlocked the skin.

Playing COMPLETE

Assasins Creed Mirage (PS5)

I enjoyed this shorter experience than the previous games & the focus on stealth combat and tools is my default playstyle.

Playing NEXT
After Infinite Wealth it will most likely be Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. My aim for this year is to focus first on games released in 2024 that I want to play, if nothing is available then I will go back and look at my backlog.

Playing BACKLOG
These are games I already own that I really need to find some time to enjoy.

Starfield
Spiderman 2
Judgment
Life is Strange
Sackboy
Lost Judgment
Outer Wilds
Shadow Tactics
Disco Elysium
Empire of Sin
Bioshock Collection
Dragons Dogma Dark Arisen
Like A Dragon Ishin

Cats Hidden in Paris (Steam Deck): COMPLETED!

Posted on 07/02/2024 Written by deKay

There seems to be a lot of “find the cats hidden in these pictures” games. I’ve played a few recently, but this one is by a different developer, and is one huge picture rather than a series of connected ones (like A Castle Full of Cats). The idea is the same, though.

Not much more to say, really, aside from as well as finding 100 cats, you can also get an achievement for finding 5 gulls. Which I did. It’s free on Steam if you want to play yourself.

96: Magic Beans
byugvm

What is this word “late” which you are saying? I do not recognise it and I do not understand it and I do not wish to believe it exists! Episode 96 cannot be late, for it was never scheduled. Sir, you embarrass yourself.

Arguments about timetabling aside, we would like to invite you to enjoy this most recent (at time of typing) episode of your favourite podcast! deKay, Kendrick and Orrah huddled round a warm bucket of cocoa and discussed, to varying lengths, the important news of our time – including Nintendo’s Mario Direct, more unfortunate developers losing their jobs because Money, Microsoft increasing the price of Game Pass (again, because Money) and Starbreeze getting several years into developing an eagerly anticipated Dungeons & Dragons game before pulling the plug because, well, Money. Thankfully, there’s some Good Stuff too, like chat about these games.
