Gunman Clive: Completed!

Posted on 22/04/2013 Written by Xexyz

It didn't get dull; each level introduced new ideas, and then it finished.  The last levels were set in space, with changing gravity and directions.  The last boss took a couple of attempts to kill.  And then "duck mode" opened.  If you want to find out about duck mode yourself, read no further ...

Duck mode has you navigating the same levels with the same controls, with one exception - you have no gun, and therefore you can't shoot.  Suddenly the whole point of the game shifts, becoming an exercise in timing between opponent's shots rather than positioning yourself for your own shooting.  I'm not sure I'll go through the whole game again, but it's a great idea for an unlockable.

Gunman Clive: pew pew

Posted on 18/04/2013 Written by Xexyz

When asked to name a cowboy, I'd probably go for Hank, Clint, or Joe.  You'd have to get pretty far down the list before you got to 'Clive'.

Gunman Clive is a charming 2D platform shooter, with the graphics looking as if they've been pencil drawn although they're actually 3D models.  The gameplay is pretty simple, jumping and shooting in straight lines, which is particularly annoying when your character can only shoot horizontally but enemies can shoot diagonally.  At times there's a puzzle aspect, working out how to get to a location you can shoot from without being killed.

I've completed the first set of five levels and killed the first boss.  I hope there are new ideas introduced in the next levels; while the game is fun it is in danger of getting a little repetitive.

Picross e2 (3DS)

So. Many. Puzzles!

I’m over half way through, I think – but that’s only in terms of the number of puzzles left. They’re bigger now. And take longer to complete. The first few I could do in 15 seconds, now some are 15 minutes. And that’s assuming I don’t mess it up and have to restart.

Code of Princess (3DS): COMPLETED!

Posted on 01/04/2013 Written by deKay

Do you like Guardian Heroes? Of course you do. Everyone with any sort of soul does.

As a direct consequence of liking Guardian Heroes, you also (even if you haven’t played it) like Code of Princess. It’s a sequel that never was, with no link to the original. Save for playing out very similarly and being awesome. I won’t describe how to play Code of Princess because you already know (and if you don’t, go away and read about Guardian Heroes).

Six hours in, and I’ve fought wave after wave of various monsters, soldiers, boss characters, dragons, trees and robots. Over and over. Yet, somehow, the repetition wasn’t repetitious. I know! It sounds impossible, but still – fighting everything, repeatedly, remains fun! Even when you replay the same level multiple times to gain XP!

But six hours, and I’ve completed it. Pretty short, yes?

Not when you consider that I’ve only completed the main story. With one character (the titular Princess, in all her nudeness, with her massive sword). I’ve only just started to play through as a second character (there are four). And then there’s the quest mode, with piles more levels and loads more characters to play as (that you unlock during the main game). And then there’s the Free Play mode where you can play levels as any character – including all the minions and monsters and useless peasants and overpowered superbosses. YES.

AND!

Then there’s online co-op! And online vs modes!

Six hours was a lie. That’s how long it took to get to the credits. I’m actually 13 hours in, and I’ve barely touched the content. Fantastic!

Dragon Quest IX

Posted on 08/12/2011 Written by choobs

So, sitting here while Hurricane Bawbag howls around Dow Folly. The power keeps dropping out and, as I’ve had to work from home due to the extreme weather warning, I’m thankful, for once, that I have an ipad.

So, with the house shaking all round me, what better time to post a quick update on DQ9.

I played through the preamble and found that my little angelic character has been punted to earth as a mortal. She’s dashed around a lot doing good deeds, killed roaming monsters, and cleared a couple of rather lovely dungeons.

Now at level 19, I’ve just clambered back up to my angelic home only to discover all is not well.

This is a lovely little rpg with a great combat system (and particularly good companion ai if you don’t want to micromanage), all the stats in the world, and stupendous writing.

byugvm

Look, March was a bad month, OK? We didn’t do an episode and we know that made you all sad but it can’t be helped. What’s done is done. Water under the bridge. A delicious chocolate river slurped up by a fat German child while a man in a silly suit watches in glee. We just can’t do anything about it. Except press on with another episode and some lickable wallpaper.

In Episode 92 dem mans deKay, Orrah and the unlikely-y named “Kendrick” have Switch 2 Real Actual Facts to tell you about, the surprise everyone expected release of Oblivion: We Made It Pretty Edition, a new Star Wars game, and one of us has bought a new console. Who and what? You have to listen to find out! While you’re listening, you should also hear words about these games and more!
